Best source on celestial navagation I have found is A Star to Stear Her By  by Edward J. Bergin. I have used it as well as fellow captains for the coast guard celestial endorcement nescessary for a all oceans license.

Just another tip. When bedding anything don't tighten and squeze out all the bedding, only snug the hardware dowm initally and wait a couple of days to finally tighten. This leaves more bedding between the surfaces and actuall acts as a gasket that you can tork down more latter if needed.

FYI  Goof Off will soften 5200. Also heat will soften it.

No need to remove the mechinacal lift pump if you want to go electric. The check valves in the mechanical pump will allow fuel to pass right thru. I always install a automotive electric pump with a switch on all my boats as a back up. Fuel will also flow thru this pump when it is off. It's really handy to fill the fuel filter when changeing it so you dont have to bleed the system. Also eliminates having to hand pump the mechanical filter if you have to bleed. Install the electric pump as close to the fuel tank as possible as electric pumps perform better on the pressure side. As far as pressure it's not critical. Injecter pum,ps will run on gravity flow as long as there is no air or interuption.

To really polish the tank and fuel you have to aggitate the tank also. A professional will use a small hose under high pressure to return the fuel to the tank. The hose flops around like a snake and breaks loose as much sediment and scale as possible. This is the stuf that will break loose when you are sailing or motoring and the fuel is sloshing around in the tank. There are additives that can loosen disolve these also. StarTron is the best cleaner. Also use a additive every time you add fuel and you shouldent have to polish your fuel unless it sits in the tank for more than a year.

No one mentioned a engine driven compressor. mine, self installed, will refreeze the 3 holding plates in 1 hour a day. About 2/3 a gallon of diesel a day, and free if underway, This is the max run time in the hottest climates. Cold beer and ice with No drain on the altenator or batteries.

As for the front seal. Remove the starter and hold the starter ring gear with a large screw driver or pry bar while removing and torking the bolt. A two person operation.

The Paragon transmission not shifting into reverse and having to be held there is a inducation that the reverse band has to be adjusted, tightened. There is a procedure to accomplish that in the manual'

Ed Stainless steel and diesel are not a good combination. You would be better using USCG TYPE 1 FIRE-ACOL hose.

Just one more quick input. Were any of the broken vanes missing from your impeller. If so They are someware in the cooling system and could impede the flow if you don't find them. Sounds like you have everything covered and some good advice.

Ed,
The alge X does not work as advertised. I have found the best thing on the market is Startron tank cleaner and then use the Startron diesel conditioner and stabalizer every fill. It does everything it says. I have avoided fuel polishing on several occasions with the tank cleaner. West Marine carries it.

Rich, I believe it's more of a time consideration for oil change intervels when you talk about sulpher. The worst conditions are short running periods where the oil is not hot for long enough to eliminate any moisture. The damage to the engine occurs weather it's running or not.
Just wanted to take this oppertunity to wish you God speed, and looking forward to updates of your trip

Leo, I installed a High Seas diesel heater actually attached to the sail track on the aft side of the mast. I don't think it's made anymore. It's pretty central in the boat and low, heat rises, just above the floor. Used a heat shield on the shower bulkhead, a finned flew pipe with a 12V fan to circulate. This kept us warm while living on the boat 2 years in Maryland.
