Does anyone know the model # of the fuel filter on a W40?  I have looked everywhere and the only thing I can find is that it is part #14776.  That only helps me if I buy it from a Westerbeke dealer, but I would really rather not do that.

Try NAPA with the part number. They are pretty good about being able to cross filters.

Here are the cross-referenced filter numbers for the Lucas CAV filter mounted on the engine:

Wix 33166, Fram C1191-A, FLEETGUARD FF167,

NAPA Gold 3166, PUROLATOR F50149,

MOTORCRAFT FD157, FILTERMART.COM 28-0187,

CHAMP (STP) L296F

I just finished adding the Racor IN CAV filter adapter and now can use spin-on filters instead of messing with the Lucas CAV filter assembly.  Check out this website for an alternate adapter.

Thanks, I got the Fram filter.  I also finally found a list of after market parts for the W40 at http://www.sltf.com/boat/system/engine/

Eveningebb,

I was just looking into changing fuel filters and came across your post about the spin on adapter. From what I gather you could use a Racor 32008 with this adapter. Is that correct?
I'm asking because some believe that the primary should be a 10 micron and the secondary a 2 micron. And so far all the spin on filters are 6-10 micron except the 32008.
I currently have a Racor 500 fg with a 2 micron element as the primary and a 10 micron WIX as the secondary.

Thoughts?

Leo,

I use a 10 micron Racor filter in my 500FG primary.  For the spin-on secondary I use the NAPA 3361 (crosslisted: Wix 33361 and Pur F50284), this is a 6 micron filter.  The old CAV filter used a 10 micron filter.

You might be able to use the RACOR 32008 that you mention, but you'd be better off with the B32016 since it's 2 inches shorter -- you can get this in 2, 10, or 20 microns.  The issue with the spin-on replacement is clearance over the starter -- the NAPA filter is only 3.352 inches high, the Racor 32016 is 5.85 inches high and the 32008 is 7.5 inches high.  To use the adapter with the short NAPA filter, I only had to raise the filter head by about 2 inches.  I'm not sure you'd want to go much higher with the assembly.  I'm happy with the set-up.

Best,

Dirk,

I think I'll go with the 10mic primary and the 6mic for the secondary as you suggested. I thought about taking it down to 2mic but that's probably over kill.

Thanks for the part numbers,

Leo

I should have made clear that when you raise the CAV filter head to install the IN CAV adapter and spin-on filter, you'll need to replace the fuel lines that run to/from the injector pump as well as the fuel line from the lift pump.  If you are only raising the assembly two inches (or so) you'll be able to reuse the other lines.  Bending and installing the fuel lines is a manageable task although finding replacement fittings can be difficult.
