Sail Design Specifications

Could not find a thread that collects this information so I'm starting one.

Currently Hyde Sail  is working with me on a new mizzen design. The main is done for now.

There are 2 specifics I'm hoping someone out there can help me with.

1. What is the size of the cars in the mizzen mast track. Hyde sews these directly to the luff rope for better aerodynamics. Don't care about the foot because that will be loose.

2 What is the offset of the mizzen tack grommet.  This requires measuring the distance from the aft edge of the boom to the forward inside edge of the foot grommet with the outhaul tightened up. That reef hook on my boom will swivel and cause the offset to increase when the outhaull is tightened. Too loose and there's a bulge , too tight and the outhaul will pull on the lowest luff car instead of the tack hook.

When I get all the info I will post it here as well as main sail specs I have collected.
So far I have this.   My old mizzen was measured by pulling the luff, foot and leech tight with ropes and measuring the straight line distances of the triangle to the outside edges. These measurements determine boom angle which is something the sail designer needs to know.

Luff 23' 5"
Foot 7' 8"
Leech 24' 3"

Pete,
I can meassure my sail slugs and let you know, but is the question that you are asking about the distance from the tack fitting to the "black band" on the mizzen boom?

Dale,

Thanks in advance for looking into this. Here's a very rough sketch (PDF) of what tack offset is. Its all at the tack corner. Black band is the clew. Not an issue. I'm impressed with the detail that this sail designer takes. This measurement is probably trivial but when done right ensures that the sail will look perfect when set. It should be self explanatory. On my Ketch there a reef hook screwed into the gooseneck that toggles a little bit at the tack corner of the mizzen.

If this become an issue the sail designer will simply go down to the marina and measure it himself. So not to worry. But he's a bit under the gun getting his orders in for the next deadline with the sail loft this weekend.

I'll be in touch as I may be in your neighborhood later this month.   Regards, Pete Weisskopf

Pete,

I will only be able to give you a best educated guess on the offset.  My mizzen mast is already hanging form the ceiling of the boat barn (still accessable however) and I will not be able to mount up the boom on the gooseneck slide.  I can measure the dimension from the aft face of the mast mast to the center hole in the gooseneck slide and the center hole of the mount on the boom to the centerline of the tack fitting.  My tack fitting is a swiveling snap shackle however.  Will this do?

As for the mizzen sail slug, the part that goes in the track measures .675" wide & .122 thick.

Thanks Dale. The sail guy guessed that the mizzen cars were the next size down from the main which would make them 7/8" main down to 5/8" mizzen. Which seems to be what you measured. My old  mizzen has no visible offset in the tack grommet as built.  Pete
