Hi.  I need to change the cutlass bearing on my 1983 Cutter (Kwaheri # 45) and am wondering if anyone knows the dimensions and where to purchase one.  The parts list in my manual is confusing to me.  It says that Part # 21143 is a "Cutlass bearing 1", P-39."  Listed next is Part #21145 "Cutlass bearing 7/8" x 1 3/8" x 3 1/2 " for propeller shafts for P-30, P-33, P-35."  I think my shaft and strut are original, but these dimensions don't seem right.  My manual is the same one as SeaDragon has posted, Dated 10-1-81.    I found another post on this site that has the dimensions for the ketch's cutlass bearing, but they don't seem right either.

Thanks, Ann

The ketch uses 1 1/8 X 1 5/8 X 4 1/2, also known as "BELT". I would expect the cutter to use the same bearing, but you never know. We keep a spare.

This definately fits the ketch if the shaft and strut are original. The shaft in the ketch is 1 1/8"- the cutter should be the same.

The first number is the shaft size, which sounds about right for the Pearson 30, 33, and 35. I think you have a 1 1/8" shaft. You should be able to get one through most of the online vendors or your local propellor shop.

For what it's worth the Pilothouse uses a 1 1/8 shaft also, so I would think it's likely they all do. I happen to have a brake cylinder hone from the days you could rebuild brake cylinders on cars and I used it to clean up the inside of the strut when changing the bearing.

I just replaced the one in my 365 ketch.  4.5" long by 1.625" OD. My shaft was 1 1/8.  I say "was" because the cutlass bearing was totally worn out and the shaft badly scored.

Getting the set screws out was tricky. I had to drill one of them. Luckily I drilled it undersize and it sprung loose.  I was then able to back it out.

At the front of the strut is a machined collar so you must drive the bearing out toward the aft end.

BTW I will be posting the new Strut that I bought for this job. Mine was OK. I paid $725 for it from Rudy up at DR Marine. They have the original mold from Pearson.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I'm trying to do this cutlass bearing job but can't get the prop off!  Sprayed lots of WD40, heated it with a torch, and used a rubber mallet, but no luck.  Any ideas?  Is there a special tool for this?

Your boatyard should have a prop puller. We got ours off 2 years ago with a 3 jaw gear puller. It took 2 propane torches and about all we could get on the puller. I didn't want to rent the yard's puller, but I was starting to think about it pretty hard.

3 strong guys worked with a puller and torches today, but no luck.  Is there a key in the prop that has to come out first?

I've always had good results loosening frozen stuff with BP Blaster. Has to soak in overnight. Tighten the 3 jaw puller and usually one good rap with a hammer on the yoke of the puller and it should pop free.

I put the puller on first, load it up then hold a large hammer 4-6lb onto one side of the core of the prop then hit the opposite side with another hammer,if not a good aimer use an aluminum drift.

2nd way
rub hand soap on the prop and heat up till soap turns light brown "no hotter" then use plumbers freeze it spray on the shaft only, with the puller loaded up, leave the prop nut on flush with the end of the shaft, stops you getting a face full of prop

ps are you using a normal puller if so try a hydraulic puller

Thanks everyone, we finally got the prop off!

This looks like a really nice site for advise about replacing a cutlass bearing:  http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/replacing_a_cutlass

OK guys, I'm working on the cutlass bearing project.  Got the shaft off and the old one out.  Guess what, the 367 doesn't have the same size cutlass bearing as the ketch, at least not mine.  I'll let you know when I figure it out so someone else reading this this doesn't buy the wrong one like I did.

Leo

Yes please let us know what you find. I also have a Cutter and the bearing will need changed sometime.

My bearing on my Cutter is 1 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 4 1/2".
It is definitely not the same as the ketch.
