Heaving To

What is the best way to heave to on a Pearson 365?  I haven't had to try yet (luckily), but I would like to practice.

I assume you're a Ketch!

The technique is no different in my opinion to any other sail boat, bring the bow through the wind but do not tack the Jib, set the helm to leeward and do what ever it was you were going to do, you may want to ease the mizzen a touch more than the main.

I've hove to in high winds(35-40 kt)with just the mizzen slacked a little.Even without any headsail out the bow seems to have enough windage to blow it to leeward.

I've tried mine in several configurations. The best seems to be with the headsail (a 139.9%) rolled up to about a 110, the main down, and the mizzen in hard. At that point, the boat will lock in place. I actually tried this with both the mizzen and the main up and it worked great. Then I decided to see what would happen if I dropped the main. Absolutely nothing. It seemed to have no effect. We have decided this works so well that every time we had a fish on, we would just heave to, so that we didn't pull its jaw off. This does have a certain drawback when you were broad reaching. First you have to tighten the main or mizzen up, and second, because you will go through nearly a 270 degree arc, you'll need to walk your fishing pole around nearly everything on the boat. Don't ask me how I know....

Hi,
I have a 367 cutter with a self tacking jib and haven't been able to heave to properly, although I've only tested in up to 20kts.  I spent about 2 hours last weekend playing with things and couldn't get the angle right, even after successive reefs in main and playing with the sheeting of main and stays'l.  Next time I'll try main only.  Can anybody with a cutter suggest a method?  I'd rather not do learning the expensive way.
