Need a new windlass

Good on you, Rich!  However, getting Polaris was a little harder on our pocketbook than we expected so, for now at least, we'll be attempting to repair what we've got...as soon as we figure out what IT is...hence the question - what manual windlass did Pearson NORMALLY install on their 365's?

It was a "something" 555.  We had it aboard and gave it away....I'll rack my brain to remember, but i'm sure someone out there will remember the name...they were the standard manual anchor windlass of choice and we see them out everywhere cruising today!  Lawrance maybe?????  Someone....anyone?

I think the 365 was not delivered from the factory with a windlass at all.

I'll pull my orginal order form for the boat that the preveious one and only owner kept....I think you could order it as an option..like the teak and holly sole.

I have a good working lewmar installation. It took a long while to prefect it. You need to jack up the cathead 4 inches to lead well from the anchor sprit. That will probably require a shaft extension. That is a normal item and can be purchased.  Do go the extra cost for a combination chain and rope cathead. The unit mounts just forward of the rear bluckhead of the anchor locker. You will need a VERY heavy cable for the high current. I suggest that you supply that cable through a relay to switch it off when not in use. It will prevent fire in case of a short and protect an accidential trigger that would burn out the motor.

It's a Simpson Lawrance 555.  I have the same windlass which still works great... although I rarely use it.  I have 300ft of 3/8 BBB.  We're both young and spry so if conditions are calm we usually just pull the anchor up by hand, if there's a blow we then use the windlass which is slow but gets the job done... My girl actually likes pulling the anchor, makes her feel strong (which she is for a woman) but most of the time I do it just because I can do it so much faster and then dash back to the cockpit to take the helm while she stows the chain.

I recently upgraded the electric windless on Long Winded. I use a Lewmar model. It took a few tries to perfect the installation. I prefer the vertical layout because it can help with other jobs like pulling someone up the mast . Get a head with both chain and rope. you will need it for the second anchor. You will need to jack up the windless 4 inches to clear the anchor bowsprit. That will probably need a shaft extension. You can order that with the windless. You will need a very heavy wire leads. the electrical load can be over 50 amps. It will run the length of thee boat. You should have some way to keep it turned off while not in use. You want to protect from shorts and You want to prevent accidental operation that will burn out the motor.

Turns out mine is a S/L Hyspeed.  I've removed it and will be discecting it this week looking for the problem...more to follow.

OK - so I removed the SL Hyspeed from the bow, took it home and tried to open it.  I was able to remove the clutch nut and gypsy from the starboard side and the set and washer from the port side but that's where things ground to a halt.  I can't remove the cover without first removing the clutch cone from the mainshaft, and I don't know how to do THAT.  Any suggestions?  I think something may be loose (or a missing spring or something) inside.  SOMETIMES the gears engage and the shaft turns when the handle is cranked and, at other times, the movement is only in one direction, giving way to the original position when the handle is moved forward.  Bottom line:  I need to crack it open and see what I'm up against.  Any help would be appreceated.

I'd be interested in what they're asking for it...

...in the meantime, I'll continue my quest for disassembly instructions.  Unfortunately, I'm not mechanically inclined enough to deduce (from the exploded diagram) how to go about getting past the clutch cone in order to remove the cover plate...
