Does anyone have experience replacing the raw water pump on the Westerbekeke 40? I've noticed that mine is weeping water after I shut the engine down. I believe the pump is made by Sherwood. Do you replace or rebuild these things? How difficult is it to remove. Anyone thoughts?

As with any boat project, access is the problem.  If you can get a socket on the bolts, it's pretty straight-forward to remove the pump.  Sounds like your seals have gone and you can purchase and replace them.  A helpful website is Torreson's Westerbeke parts catalog.  You can see the pump and pump parts on the cooling system page.  I think a new pump is about $450.

I replaced my pump about five years ago. Hanson Marine wanted over $500 as I recall.
Since the 40 is a Perkins 107, I found a Perkins dealer in Upstate NY who sold me the same pump for $105.
The only difference is I had to paint it red.

Very nice people to deal with.
Hope this helps.

In the back of my manual for the westerbeke 40, aka Perkins 4-108, is a service bulletin. This all came from the previous owner.

The bulletin is about replacing the raw water pump. When reinstalling it, tighten the bolts snugly but not to final torque. Turn the engine over several times without starting it. Then tighten the bolts to the final torque.

What this does is align the pump shaft with the engine driving shaft. If shafts are not co-centric, the turning will move the pump body to bring them into alignment. Once this is done, the pump body can be fixed in place by the final tightening the bolts.

Seems like good advice to me.

I was just reviewing this post and realized I had a "senior moment" when I responded.
The RAW water pump is NOT quite the same as the engine circulating pump.
It was the latter I replaced and purchased from Perkins.
Hope I didn't send you off on a tangent.

Brian: I just replaced my Sherwood water pump on my Westerbeke kPerkins 4-108. Per P365 diagrams, the "leaking water" drops is most likely raw water passing by the seals in the pump. This weep hole was drilled intentionally to warn of bad seals and impending wwater back into the motor.. ILt can be a do it your self project but you may need an arbor press to remove and add bearings and seals. (makes no sense to pull the ;pump without doing this) Also check the shaft ,and replace the impellar. Iput a thick silicon greas on the rubber impellar so that it dosen't run dry on initial start up. Bolt should be retightened while the engine is running but can be dangerous if you are near v belts. Also can turn engine over a couple of times and then tighten bolts to align the shaft.
Hope this helps John Hodes P365 Deborah, Cape Coral Fl.  mailto:gulfreachers2@aol.com">gulfreachers2@aol.com

Not to hyjack the thread on water pumps.....but......

Now I'm confuzed.  Is the Westerbeke 40 a 107 or 108?  I've seen reference to both and thought mine was a 107?

PS: I'm here at the chart table of THIRD DAY about to leave this darn boat yard.  This trip: New Profurl NC42, rebuilt high pressure fuel pump and injectors, new exaust manafold, Two new 23gal fuel tanks to replace my old leaky original tank, new fuel manafold with racor filter, and a few small items.  I find out the total yard bill next....and will have a beer ready!

Rich,

Now for more information than you wanted. The Westerbeke W40 is based on the Perkins 4 cylinder 107.4 cui diesel that dates back to the late 50's (often referred to as 4-107 or 4-108) with modifications for marine use (not the least is the red paint).. I have found that when searching for parts to ask for parts referencing the Perkins name not Westerbeke's. In most cases the parts are the same except for the red paint... However, some items are unique and required for marine use, such alternators... Marine alternators, for example, are different than truck/tractor/auto alternators in that they have spark protection to avoid igniting fumes in a closed compartment.

So like our boats (are they 39 feet long, the length my marina has come up with for billing purposes or is 36 feet long?) your W40 is really 107.4 cui and if you would like impress your powerboat friends, let them know you have 4-108....

I hope this helps.

I think the difference between the 107 and the 108 are the sleeves in the cylinders.

Marc,

You are correct the 4-108 has Dry - Interference fit cylinder liners and the 4-107 has Wet - Push fit cylinder liners and this results in slight differences of the piston's skirts and pins designs for each...

Good catch...

I had a problem with having to rebuild my sherwood water pump every other year until a found a service bulletin that said for my engine two use 3 gaskets to hold the water pump further off the engine, relieving the pressure on the main shaft and seal. Since doing this i have no further problems. Baron
