Suggestions?

Boat US now requires a survey for a new policy, Progressive won't insure over 35'.  Who is your insurance with?

I carry liability only with BoatUS (which is underwritten by Gieco I believe), no survey required. Rethinking liability only after the work I have poured into her....

I had so many problems getting insured. Got the run around the same way you did. Turns out that brokers know exactly what to lie about. We wound up with progressive through a broker, even though progressive told me it wasn't possible.

Oh, and forgive the nosiness. Is this helping out the new owner? Did that sale go through?

Not about my current boat.

Gotcha. Definitely try a few brokers.

Almost all insurers require an Insurance Survey which differs from a normal purchase survey. An insurance survey looks at items such as engine/bilge ventilation, bilge pumps, steering gear, exhaust systems, fire extinguishers and so forth.  They are looking for safety and functionality of the vessels systems, items that could lead to a loss. A normal survey address those items as well as appearance to establish a selling price, something the bank is interested in if you go belly up. Insurance surveys are typically half the price of a full blown survey.
I know most of you are in the southern areas where named storms are an issue, but up here we can get insurance through our home owners policy. I pay less than $400 for liability and comprehensive coverage. That coverage is for in water from May 15th to Oct 15th in the great lakes area and for the remainder of the year on the hard.  If I leave the great lakes I need to contact them to up my coverage or I am not covered at all.
