Cockpit winches

S/V AMITY

  On non-staysail rigged 365's I usually see two primary winches mounted on the fwd. end of the cockpit coamings.   I also see some with 4 winches.  Why the two extra winches?  Amity came with the 4-winch setup and while I have them off for refinishing the teak I'm wondering what the 4 winch config. was for.  Possibly for spinnaker handling?  Any info. much appreciated.

    Definitely big chunks of hardware taking up premium space for the very rare times we set a spinnaker.  Will delete them.  The primaries are dismounted now too... original 1978 Lewmars.  Will be replaced hopefully with Andersen's.

Change of plan.  After dismounting & servicing the Barient 28's, have decided to keep them.  Will convert them to ST with: http://winchmate.com/technical-specs/ .  Saves $2K easily.

Just sent an inquiry to see if winchmates will work on my primaries-ARCO 44's. After two weeks cruising in Maine and would have been nice to have.

  I know Winch Mates won't fit Lewmar.  Too bad... there are many non-ST Lewmars on eBay for very little.

  How was Maine?  Much fog?

Yeah, just heard back from them-no go. In Falmouth on the mooring,very little fog over the last two weeks. No crowds, of course, but pretty little wind too. Headed back to Mass. now. 50 mile plug tomorrow, the rebuilt Westerbeke 40 has been outstanding. What a great power plant for our ship.
Should mention we anchored outmost nights, but when we did grab a mooring folks were great about the social distancing. Everyone had a mask as did we and intelligently handled the fueling and docking procedures to minimize risk. They also seemed to appreciate visitors and the business we brought. Maine has done a really good job managing the pandemic and the gradual reopening.

  Received the Winch Mates from David & re-mounted the Barient 28's converted over to self-tailing.  The Lewmar 43's will remain non self-tailing... no ST conversion kits are available.  Since they will only be used infrequently they should be fine.

  Years ago switched over to Super Lube for the winches.  As it is synthetic it has a wide temperature window and will not change viscosity over time as will petroleum greases.

Looks great! I am intrigued with the idea of buying used Barients or Barlows and upgrading with the Winchmate kits. Are the Barient 28s' the right size for our Genoa's? Little confusing to compare to Lewmars etc. Pair of barients available used for $400 or so and the upgrade kits are $850 for a pair.
That's pretty attractive pricing if the sizes are correct for our headsails.

  The previous owner moved the original Lewmar 43's aft on the coaming to serve a spinnaker.  The Barient 28's were mounted where the Lewmars were in the primary position.  28's are more than adequate for any genny a 365 can carry.  Back in the day, Barients were considered top of the line... very heavily built and all SS.

  If you really shop around you can likely find non-ST 28's for not much money.  Many older boats are changing over to ST's so non-ST's are a glut on the market.  David at Winch Mates was very helpful in going over the conversion as he is an experienced sailor himself.
