Leo,

One thing to do while you are at the show is to stop by the Edson booth and talk with the reps about how to inspect and repair/replace if necessary the cables, chains, pulleys, and backing plate that make up the steering system on our boats....

Just a suggestion.

I am going to tackle the helm post this weekend....I have to install throttle and transmission cables and holder.  The Edson people told me I have to undo the steering cables and lift the helm.  Push the cables through the floor plate then apply the holder.  Next start the cables with holder in pedestal then attach pesdestal to floor plate......whew!

POG

Leo,

Your list is much like mine, with several additions.  Some of the things you have tackled were already in place on POG, like a very recent standing rigging, existing liferaft, lifesling etc.  In many cases I have tried to let "good be well enough", but you seem to have made few compromises. It would be interesting to know what you figure all this transformation cost you - or don't you want to think about it?

The first couple of years of this 7 year ongoing project I kept track of everything. I bought everything possible when on sale and did all of the work myself. But soon stopped filling in the spreadsheet.
So now my best guess is 40 to 50k in all, saying it out loud is kinda scary!
When I was researching my boat another Pearson owner told me he had 70k in his refit. At the time I thought I could do it for half that, now it sounds right in the ballpark considering all he had done.
Makes you look a little harder at boats that have had all this done and more for sale at bargain basement prices. But then I have gained the mechanical skills and knowledge of my boat along the way.

Now it looks like another 8kish for electronics, anchor, chain and a furler for the spinnaker. And then we have the off shore/cruising list.........good thing my wife likes the boat and has a good job!

Leo...I know it is an inviting thought to buy it after someone else has done all the work....but we know it is done right when it is done by us and just not painted over........plus we might know how to repair it when it breaks.....ain't this fun

;D let's hear you mutter that when your head's in the heads repairing it ;D ;D

I was really lucky finding a boat that had most of the big items done.  I paid top dollar because I did not want to spend my time fixing the boat.  When I added up what had to be done to a less cared for boat vs what I had in the one I bought I was way ahead.  Also the big thing is I work with my hands and my time is money, it does not pay me to spend time fixing up a boat vs what the same time could make me in real dollars.  Also the big thing for me is I don't have the money to put out huge amounts at a time.  I can afford $150 a month more for a payment that has everything already in it.  Of course there is always something to do no matter how well cared for the boat is, I just rebuilt my head last weekend, not that bad.

After owning Venture for 7 years, she has truly become a labor of love. It was a rocky start, but she has won me over.

Some more to add to the list. I installed a new wheel pilot and seems to work well unless I'm have too much sail up. And that happens a lot. Also installed a new Simrad NSS8 and the 4G radar. The radar has such good close range returns that I could use it to navigate the marina, way cool. Now to get Sol to the Pacific where I can use all the new goodies!

Leo

more additions to "the list"

replaced the 40 gallon fuel tank for two 20 gallon plastic tanks
new stay sail and furler
Xantrex 2000 watt inverter charger
bottomsider cushions
new counter tops

I think I may be forgetting something.... oh well I'll add it on later.

Now that my wish list is almost checked off and now we are considering selling Sol for a larger boat. My wife is really wants a second cabin for guest. I really like one cabin and temporary guest but as they say happy wife happy life!
