anchor locker

The anchor locker on my 365 has never been used for rope and chain storage.  I replaced the dorade vent with a deck pipe, my question is what do others have to keep the chain from going underneath the water tank.  I am thinking about cutting a board to fit in the lower part of the locker, with holes for water to drain.  But then I thought the extra rope in the bottom of the locker would keep things in place.

just let it all pile up in the hole. It plays out fine. You are over thinking it.

What I really like about checking this everyday....is that it gives me thoughts and ideas about problems I can circumvent.
Now I have to go look at my chain locker......another question..I going to be in the tropics in fairly shallow water most of the time.  How much chain rode are ya'll using on the main and back up anchors.  I am going with a 20 pound danforth and 20 feet of chain for daily use and a 35 CQR with 30 feet for back up.  Ideas?

We spent nearly 2 years cruising the east coast and Bahamas. Our primary was a CQR on 200 feet of chain because in poor holding ground the sheer weight of your ground tackle may be as important as the "bite" of your anchor. Our secondary was a Bruce on 20 feet of chain and 200 feet of laid nylon. In a blow (40 - 60 kts) we lay on both anchors at 45 degrees to one another and occasionally the Bruce would drag. My belief is that the lack of catenary caused the anchor to plow it's way to the surface rather than continue to bury. Thus my STRONG belief in weight of ground tackle. This problem can be dealt with with a weight slid down the rode, I have read, but I have no experience with that. Hope this info is useful. Jim

Thanks...were you in a hurricane hole for the blow? wind break?  What is the weight of you anchors?
I do not have a winch yet...might not.  I have concerns or pulling weight off bottom.  But in shallow water 20' or less...you are not picking up entire weight...just what is hanging.

Bill and Billy,I have just finished redoing my chain locker and anchor windless will try to send photos.I set it up to have a direct feed from the windless to the chain box (chain box should hold about 200'of 5/16 chain)forward of the chain box is open for second anchor.Primary anchor is a CQR 35lb.with 160' of 5/16 chain secondary anchor is a 22lb. Danforth with 200' three strand nylon with 20' of 5/16 chain.I hope this helps. Allen

it's too bad Drew took down his early "Lostonpurpose" projects and photos. He did a good job on seperating his anchor locker. Basically he just fiberglassed in a piece of plywood seperating the locker in half running for and aft. Stb side for primary and port side for secondary anchor rode. Make sure you leave an area open so sea water from rode will run through to the bildge area.

We spend most summers in the Bahamas and carry a 35# Delta with 100' of chain followed by 9/16 3-strand. This combo has worked well for us in all conditions. I've never wished we had more chain, but also am glad we don't have less. Our backup is a Danforth with 60' of chain, which we only rarely use. We have no windlass.

On my boat, there is no opening under the forward part of the bow water tank. The tank is tabbed all the way to the hull. This also means that water collects in my anchor locker, which I must occasionally drain.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will just let the line pile up and see how it does, at some point I will separate the locker and add a bottom for both anchors, next years project its time to go sailing.

I was referring to a half dozen different blows, all of which we hid out as much as possible. We were never in an open roadstead. We never had to contend with seas, only wind. We then had a 42' steel cutter so ground tackle was bigger, but comparable equipment on Talaria would be 35# CQR on 5/16 chain and 33# Bruce on 1/2" nylon. I agree that 100' of chain on a nylon tail should be adequate. Friends of ours used that setup wiwth no problems.   On anchor lockers...ours is also closed to the bilge and has to be occasionally drained so Pearson must have altered at some point. Thanks for the locker divider ideas. I installed a Lewmar windlass last year and have been racking my brain trying to figure how to keep the rodes separate. On the windlass issue, we have a capstan and a wireless remote, so I can lead a halyard through a snatch block to the capstan and while Carrie tails, I can go up the mast, controlling the ascent myself, with no muscleman on a winch below!!! A real boon for us older folks. Jim

Our first (1978) 365 had a bottom in the achor locker that a P.O. had added. The locker was also divided fore and aft. I can tell you for sure that 300' of 5/8" nylon and 50' of 5/16" chain will fit in each side. It's full, but it will fit.
