My HillerRange is 40 yrs. old, tired and likely unsafe.  Need recommendations for new range.  3 burners.  Thanks.

We cut the top out of our range and kept the oven on its gimbal.   Then dropped in a Force 10 cooktop on top of it.  That gave it all the nice and safe features and didn't cost very much at all to do.

Bought at West Marine as the wife worked there.

I used an Dometic Origo 3000 alcohol stove top which is a two burner
And replaced the oven with an electric toaster over, pretty much just for marina use
The pair are joined together with an epoxy plywood box and hung on home made gimbals

This because I think fuel stoves are safer than gas,or at least the fuel is
for which I furnished the lazerette with a 27 liter fuel tank

Gas will give you more heat quicker, the 3000 is approx 7000 btu so there are downsides
but you can haul metho/alcohol back to the boat a lot easier than a gas bottle, especially in a dinghy or backpack
and you never have to worry about fittings etc

Very nice installation!  Lots to consider...  Cheers!

thanks
for me this was a logical route
In this state you have to get a gasfitter to do the work or approve the gas system (probably wise)
a quick check around concluded that might be $300 just for him to turn up
since I could sell the old range for $550, and buy the Origo second hand (but good) on ebay for $200. 27 liter tank (7+ us gall) for $50
you dont need a tank but I wanted a safe long duration supply option
it was a no brainer to do some work and swap stuff out, I actually made a profit

Origo are very simple, there just isnt anything to go wrong, or if it did its a pair of pliers to fix it
you can get combos with ovens the Origo 6000, but I notice West Marine dont carry them anymore
they do take longer to boil a pint of water as there is less btu, but thats fine, the fuel is everywhere and easy to transport in a backpack or dinghy
cheers

Really happy with the Tasco 755 LP I put in 5 years ago. No problems at all with temp regulation and quality. I'm surprised they don't have more market visibility, because they're a well made alternative to the big names.
