Having taken two weeks to motor sail the ICW from Kemah Texas to New Orleans, down the Mississippi across the bay to Key West and on to Havana I needed to purchase a new alternator. With the belt at the correct tension the water pump pully decided enough was enough and disintegrated.
I have a 1982 367 cutter named Ebb Tide and she has a Universal (Westerbeke) 5444 (44hp) Diesel. When trying to replace said pully the dealer needs to know if it's a type 'A' or 'B'. I cannot find any identification plate anywhere - has anyone any ideas ??? please.

Your Univeral 5444 has a Kubota Block: V1902

Kubota Tractor that it was used in: R400 Loader
They can only look up the parts using the "what kind of tractor do you have".  They can't or won't look up by block number and they have not Universal cross-references

Freshwater pump has 15 bolt holes (or 16 bolt holes, you need to count them). My Universal 5444 (also a 1982 367) has a 15 bolt hole water pump.

I recently rebuilt the engine and replaced the entire water pump with kubota part.

Cost is about $120 for the entire water pump (dont' forget the gasket).

The pulley is called a Fan Pulley and has a kubota part number: 15471-74250

I don't know what Westerbeke means by A or B, unless they are referring to the 15 vs 16 bolt holes. I don't know if the pulley is different between the 15 hole and the 16 hole.

If you can remove what's left of the pulley, take it to Kubota, tell them it's from a R400 loader and see what they have.

Enter "R400" for the search term,
Click Open on results and find your part.

Attached is a cross-reference I compiled during the rebuild

A or B has to do with the belt width. Do you know the belt number?

Shacklepin,  I also have a 5444 Universal . You say you bought a new Alternator, can I ask you the type and number.

Ed. I am sorry but I can find no identifying label on the alternator. In all honesty I was glad to find one in Cuba. It was supplied by a friend of a friend of a guy that worked at Marina Hemingway so its origin must remain unquestionable. I researched the Internet to confirm the wiring layout and the attached is what I used as it is identical. Maybe you can identify it from the picture.

Shackelpin, Thanks but that is not the alternator on my engine. Mine has  an external regulator.
