Replacing Shift Cable

I need to replace my shift cable. I am wondering if this is a job I can do myself or one better left to a professional. If it is a job I can do myself does anyone know where I can find the parts?

If it isn't a job I can do myself, is the $1000 estimate I got from the first professional too high?

Seems like the cable is about 100 bucks. It's not that bad of a job. You will need to unpin the clevis inside the steering pedestal. There is a slotted head screw about halfway down the backside of the pedestal. It holds a clamp that secures both cables. You should be able to loosen it and work the shift cable out and the new one in. If you take the screw all the way out, it may be interesting getting it back in. If I remember correctly both are Morse brand cables. If somebody doesn't chime in with the number, pull it out and match it up. Our local shrimp boat supply keeps them in stock and is much cheaper than the yacht shops. It does not come with the clevises on the ends, so save those.

The cable clamp in the pedestal is a bit fussy but doable.

The replacement is not particularily difficult, just time consuming.  On Phantom, I had to remove the chain to the quadrant to access the cable clamp.  Go for it!

I have to replace my shift cable and wonder how the project went. The screw head on the pedestal was filed off by a previous owner?? It finally let go after 6 years and I need to replace the cable since it is bound in the sheath. I would think a 9 foot cable would be cheaper somewhere other than through Edson.

Any input would be great.
