I pulled out my mizzen stays'l for the first time and hoisted it to see how it goes together. It looks like the logical place to secure the tack would be the base of the lifeline stanchion just aft of the main top shroud. Does anyone have experience with this? Is it well enough reinforced to handle the stresses? Should a backing plate be added? Are there any known gotcha's when using the sail?

Ralph,

That is where we tack ours, on the stanchion base on the upwind side.  The bail on the end of the mizzen boom is for the sheet, here I stick a block with a snap shackle for easy on and off.  I currently do have a separate halyard but do not have a winch.  That is in order for this season.  Without a load I hoist and tie off the halyard.  Works OK but still should have a winch.

Have fun...

What are the dimensions you are using for the mizzen staysail. I am thinking of getting one for later this year if I can find a yused one at Baccon Sails
