I'm replacing my old impeller, and I have a couple of water pump questions.

• Having fairly mauled the screws getting them out, I'm thinking of replacing the pump cover with a Speedseal.  Anybody have any experiences with those?  There's an expensive one, and a very expensive one. I've read mixed reviews.

• Is there enough space between the tank and the impeller to squeeze in an impeller puller?  If I have to pull the whole pump, that will nullify my previous Speedseal question.  I'll just get new screws and do it the old-fashioned way.

Any other suggestions?  I'm about to order some Globe impellers, as per Nigel Calder.

cheers,

Michael

I read some negative stuff on Globe impellors recently- seems like they are having a problem with the hub coming loose in the impellor. Water pump quits on you, you start troubleshooting, pull the impellor and it appears fine, but it is not.

Can't remember where I read it...
Look around on the web a little- you may find something. Seems like the same guy had 2 of them die pretty close together- same failure.

No experience with the impeller you mentioned.  However, there is definitely not room to get an impeller puller in there and back it out.  Tried it, wanna buy an useless impeller puller? Also, use caution when replacing the pump.  It has to fit exactly.

I did find a thread on sailnet that complained of this problem, and poor service from Globe.  It's hard to evaluate these things some times, but in this case I decided to go with the Sherwood Impeller Kit.  (The pump is a Sherwood F85)  Even if you could run your water pump for 15 minutes dry (Globe's claim), it seems like the impeller would be the least of your worries at that point.

Thanks for saving me some $ on a useless puller.
