Need some drawings and part numbers for our overhaul

Hi Folks,

We've made it to New Zealand and are planning some major work while we are here.  Biggest thing is to pull the engine, pretty it up, and replace the fuel tank.

I found the fuel tank drawings on this site (Sweet!) and have a local guy who will make a new one out of plastic.

But I really need to have drawings and P/Ns for the following items so I can figure out how to get them down here before I haul out as I am afraid of long lead times. We haul in mid-January.

I went on the R&D website to look for a new damper plate, but don't see how I can choose without measuring the plate.  Does anyone have the right P/N for the W40/Paragon combination?

I have a bent prop shaft (again!) and am looking for a drawing to have a quote and the shaft made here.

Wondered if anyone had a source for engine mounts, including P/Ns so I can order them in.

Cheers!

Found this on a post here after doing more searching onsite:
"After a bit more research, I found that the best vibration reducing engine mounts seem to be made by R&D Marine.  After talking with them a couple of times, they recommended their "Super Mounts," part number 800-101.  Cost is $94 each. They appear to be the same size as the existing mounts I have, more or less."

And then further down was a reply that the P/n used  was 80-004, standard mount.

The post was from 2008.  I found a NZ distributor on R&D's web page and sent an email off for a quote.

Wayne,

The R&D damper plate selection guide  PDF is an virtual IQ test. Select the spline, then the element and the backing plate. You will need dimensions and #of the holes on the flywheel.  You also need to know your tourque. Kenneth Planck info@pyiinc.com up in WA figured me a PN for a W58/velvet drive.  Paragon is smaller diameter spline.  I see you found the distributor in Auckland.

You might look at Bushings Inc. for the motor mounts.  DF-2207-2 for the mid range Westerbekes. $48 from various distributors.

I got mine from go2marine (free shipping) which might not include where your are at.

Pity about the shaft. Was it a lifting strap? I'm sure you already figured out how expensive stuff is in NZ.

Thanks Pete!

I'll look into those.  And yeah, thingsz are spendy here but due to a very strong American dollar, not as much as it used to be.

As for the shaft, it was my own feakin' fault.  While I was rebuilding the gear box last year, I leaned it against a wall in my apartment for a couple months and it warped a bit.  Couldn't tell by looking at it but the vibration at the shaft packing is just enough that I am not comfortable with it.  Fortunately even though we've sailed 10k NM, we didn't motor very much.

Still looking for a shaft drawing, although I do have this much: Prop shaft, in inches: 82 3/4 x 1 1/8. Aqualoy stainless.  Single taper.  Prop nut is 3/4" UNC thread  Still need a drawing for a key way and taper, although I could just take the above dimensions and my spare prop to the machinist if need be.

Wayne,

Warped Shaft? Man that's hard to believe. You would think a shop could but it on V blocks with a dial indicator. If there a high side It might come out with a simple light press. Before you spend money on a new one I mean. I know we have had this discussion somewhere but a misaligned coupler (V drive) or worn cutless bearing could make it look warped.

Good Luck with all of that and have fun too. I'm sure your will make some new friends there especially after they have all  had a chance to rummage through your wallet.

I tried aligning the V-drive a dozen ways from Sunday.  And yeah, leaning a steel bar against something like that can warp it out a bit.  I've seen that with helicopter drives that specifically warn you not to do it.  I shoulda known better.  I fer sure will have it mapped out with a dial indicator and some rollers.  If I had a dial indicator and some way to mount it I could do it before I removed it from the boat.  But definitely before I spring for a new shaft.  Mostly I wanted to get a bid and make sure the machinist had stockon hand before I showed up there.

INCOMMUNICADO

Wayne, Here is what you need for your prop shaft. Aqualoy stainless steel A 22 82 and 3/4" X1 1/8" single taper. As far as the dampener plate I think they are the same for a 107 and a 108 . I have had three different tyrannies they all fit the dampener plate . I do hope this helps. Allen

Allan,
I got those dimensions from a previous post you did.  Turns out its good enough for a bid and to make sure the machinist has the materials in stock.  So I'm good to go there.  Thanks!

I also found drawings that matched the eng mounts I have from PYI. The 800-004.
http://www.pyiinc.com/index.php?section=rd_marine&action=engine-mounts-drawings&sn=6

Sounds like I'm not going to get a P/N for the damper until I have sizes as the plates changed by year according to customer service at PYI.  But he said it should be in the $225-250 range.  (US Dollars).

So I think I'm set.  I think when I am done with this project I will make a post here with all the materials and costs for this job along with the drawings needed in case anyone else is considering it. It took a lot of emails and online research to come up with the needed stuff.  Fortunately, none of the materials look like they will be hard to find.

In the mean time thanks very much to Pete and Allan for their help.

I have the advantage of living 5 miles from PYI and spent some time with them to determine the best R&D mounts to use. Based on the weight of our Westerbeke 40 and Paragon tranny, they recommended the 80-000-3 for them to be firm enough for the weight with enough give to dampen vibration. $362 including tax but no shipping.
I will be doing the mounts, damper plate, v-drive rebuild, new shaft and cutlass bearing in a couple weeks and will post some results. My biggest uncertainty is getting everything aligned.
Fair Winds,
Risto

Thanks Risto.  That would be awesome as it sounds like what we are looking at as well.

Alignment is not as hard as it sounds.  Pete's explanation sounds like it will give you a perfect set, but the vdrive is pretty easy to make exact and there is some latitude for the engine shaft.
