Hi there!

Has anybody replaced the propeller shaft strut? Would you know where I would get a replacement, general cost of the whole fiasco?

Thanks in advance,
Kier

Kier,

The first place I would try would be Rudy at:

D & R Marine, Inc
31J Mill Street
P.O. Box 921
Assonet, MA 02702
508-644-3001
http://drmarine.com/

If anyone would know it would be him

Good luck

Kier,

What happened to your  propeller shaft strut.  Was it damaged during a haul out?  I will haul out in a couple of weeks and find it always hard to line the sling up.  What is an easy way?

First Sea Dragon is a 367 and the lift point are a little different.

But there should be a silver sticker on each side of the boat that mark where the sling should be placed.... I am sure by now the work "LIFT" has rubbed off your sticker. But there should still be an old sticker on the hull just below the teak toe rail on each side..

To see the sling in place and the sticker & location go to:

Then "Manuals" then click on "Sling Location 36 Cutter"

I hope this helps

The strut has been weakened by improper bonding I think. I drove a screwdriver into it to about a depth of an eighth to quarter of an inch. However, the degradation seems quite localized. Had a boatyard inspect it and they think it is still OK but recommend laminating a piece of carbon fibre on the bad side. This is what I may end up doing. As for slinging the boat most of the time they do it exactly like the pic shown in the thread. However, I just had the boat shipped to Florida and when they took it off the truck, they slung the rear strap against the back of the keel just below the shaft and angled it forward. This seemed to work quite well. Thanks everybody for your responses.

You can go to your local marine supply and find weather proof stickers with the word "LIFT" and place them on the boat the next time it is hauled for future reference..

Note: the pictures of Sea Dragon in the sling were taken on the day of her survey 4 years ago just before we purchased her. She had set for a couple of years, unloved and neglected.

I Have stickers on my boat but they seem to be in the wrong place.
last time I hauled out the sling was put in the same place as S/V Dosia.
I line it up with the third screw from the stern on the rub rail. Next time
I will move the sticker to the right place. I read somewhere that there are
three places to put the sling; forward of the prop shaft, aft of the rudder,
and as in S/V Dosia which is where I put it. Make sure the shaft will turn by hand before any tension is put on the sling or you  may bend the shaft.
Bad!

I replace it this year due to galvanic corrosion on the old one.  I bought one from D & R which fit OK.  They included a new cutlass bearing.  I had the boatyard do the work.

You might do some research on types of bronze, but I think the bronze that D&R uses is OK.  They get them from the Prue Foundary that used to make parts for Pearson.

For rudder shoe replacement, be careful, since there are different shoes for the ketch and cutter models.  D&R has the ketch part.

Please email me if you have questions.
