So, a very nice chap was kind enough to inform me that the sidewalls of the original heat exchanger on my 82 Model 5444 44 HP Universal (trying to ne thorough here) SER# 4001120.  He sent me a pretty discernible picture and it indeed looks pretty clogged.  Problem is, the guy that does the acid bath said the walls look too thin and this unit, from his personal experience, is pending doom.  NOTE the two shops are not connected.  One is a mechanic, the other the cleaning bath location.

Ergo - I need a new heat exchanger.  Any ideas on how best to source a new replacement unit?  I also scoured the numerous manuals good folks like you have offered.  I see no breakdown of the heat exchanger, not a parts reference number.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

I just found my copy of the actual PARTS Manual vs the engine guide.  Looks like the part # for the heat exchanger is # 299818.

Sorry, answering my own questions now.  Found two sources; Discount Marine source is one and the other is seriously now, called Mr. Cool.us...

That is the link I have for the Copper Nickel saltwater use version.  Both seem to be in the Mid $400s.  Anyone have purchase experience in either of these two sites?

I think you got us beat on that one, Verne. I haven't had to replace mine yet and don't know if it has ever been replaced.   I just wish manufacturers would standardize on their hose barbs. Exhaust manifold coolant output port is 3/4", but coolant input port on the Hx is 7/8" barb.  Same with the coolant exit port on the Hx.  I also can't figure out why raw water pump manufacturers put 3/8" ports on their pumps when there are no 3/8" bronze fittings! We're stuck using brass or plastic on the raw water pump. Stupid!

Oh well.  Good luck on the heat exchanger. Let us know how it pans out, we might need one some day.

Supposed to be here today for a re-install tomorrow.  I will keep folks posted.  Thanks.

Verne,

Did you ever get that heat exchanger?  I'm putting mine back and noticed that the paint is flaking off.

Does anyone know if there is a non-aesthetic reason to pain a copper heat exchanger?  It seems, like with Aluminum, paint doesn't stick well to it.

If there is a protective reason to paint it, what is a good paint to use?  I've kinda grown fond of Glyptal, that paint really sticks, but it sure gets tacky quick, like within 30 seconds of brushing it on.  I bought it to paint the water chamber of the v drive and have a whole quart. It's got a nice blood-red color to it also.

Thanks
