Hello All,

New to my Pearson 365 sloop and am replacing my lifelines.  It seems the aft lower lifelines would interfere with the operation of the primary winches and I am considering not having the lower lifeline on each side for the cockpit.  Is my thinking correct?

Carl, I have a sloop and it's not a problem.

Carl,

We just had a discussion on this topic. I asked the same question. From what I can gather, people may have different placements of their winches. Over 30+ years, things had a tendency to change. On my 367, the primary winches, Lewmar 48ST, are aft, just a little forward of the pedestal and a little outboard on the coaming. They do interfere with the lower lifeline. A rigger suggested that I remove the lower lifeline in the cockpit area. My question to the forum was asking if that was a good idea. I basically got 2 different opinions. I don't see anyway to avoid this interference except to remove the lower line.

On our 365 sloop, the winches are placed as Mike describes, but no interference with lowers. The attachment point on the stern rail is quite low, about six inches up from the base. This brings the lifeline to the bottom of the winch drum where it does not interfere with the sheet or the handle. It has never been a problem. Hope this helps.  Jim

Ebb Tide is cutter rigged and as such has two winches P & S. The lower lifeline terminates at the aft most stanchion and I can truly say I've never missed it. I imagine, by the height of the eye on the stern rail posts it would be too low to be of any use anyway. My advice, get rid. You don't want to lose a winch handle over the side at the wrong moment because it snagged something.
