Raw Water Pump

Went to winterize the W40, as usual I put the intake hose into the Eco friendly antifreeze, started the engine and waited for the pink stuff to exit out the exhaust. Nothing came out and the jug of antifreeze was full. So I checked the impeller and all is well. I filled the impeller with a handful of petroleum jelly and restarted the engine.  Emptied the jug in record time and out the exhaust.
OK, the impeller is new so is my cover plate worn and letting water pass around the impeller? or?

if all the water came out of the intake hose you could just have had a air lock ie:
pump trying to pump air to push up a head of water

I've had problems getting the pump to prime after rebuild.  High RPMs are required to draw up water.  *shrugs*

The air lock thing is more the case but there is one other little tid bit.  When the boat is in the water the engine and the raw water pump sit below the waterline.  To a certain extent the inlet side of the pump is under pressure.  If you pulled the hose off coming out of the engine while in the water without it running, you would find all kinds of water on its way in.

With the inlet just in the antifreeze jug, the pump has to suck the liquid up and out.  The added goo on the impeller improved the seal and its ability to suck and success.  A cleaver fix I might add.

We are having raw water pump problems. Ours has a worn housing and now it's time to replace. Yanmar uses proprietary pumps so you have to buy it from them. We should have a new one in 7-10 days. In the meantime, we'll just have to hang out at Matagorda Island.

Ray,

Perhaps you forgot that barge you are on is a sailboat?

We have been running it to charge batteries when we didn't get enough from the solar panels.

Even though we have a 200 lb dinghy on the foredeck (with room to walk around it), even though Wanda has enough groceries shoehorned into the stbd aft cabin to sink the waterline back there, even as badly trimmed and overloaded as we are, we can still do a horizon job on most cruising monohulls. You can set your drink down anywhere and it stays put until you pick it up. The queen size bed ain't bad either. Helluva condo...

Oh Ray how quickly you have changed...
Sounds like you like this multi you have. Good to hear.  Maybe a genset is in your future???
Looked at the map and it looks like a nice spot to spend some time in.  Any long distance plans in your future?
Keep smiling and stay warm!

I always found that the antifreeze is hard for the pump to pickup. I extended the intake higher than the engine and pored the antifreeze into the engine. Sometimes it is a little hard to pickup water in the spring commissioning.
