Sheet lead placement for boom-less staysail on a 367

Hi ya'll,

I have a 367 (bought spring 2012) that has no boom for its staysail. A PO remove the boom and traveller, but left the pedistal.  The staysail looks like it has been recut to not use a boom, but no PO has ever installed proper tracks for the sheet leads.

Does anyone have a 367 with a boom-less staysail? I know that they exist because I saw a picutre of Lufin It (the one totaled by a whale in Mexico) that has a T-Track on the coachroof, aft of the dorades and between the two salon windows.  I don't intend to replace the boom for the staysail and want to know 1) where to install the tracks and 2) where to lead the staysails sheets to the cockpit.

If anyone has a 367 with this setup, please let me know.

Thanks

I am curious, why would you want to modify the boat from the selftending staysail system to a more conventional system?
I would replace the missing staysail boom (a simple round tube) and call it a day.

1) There would be no reason to recut the staysail to eliminate the staysail boom.  My bet is that the staysail is just as it was.  Does it have a loose bolt rope at the bottom with the first several hanks attached to it?  If so that is how it was meant to be.  The loose rope allows the sail to move aft to be furled on the boom.

2) The design of the selftending staysail is very clever.  The inner stay is forward of the booms pedestal.  These two seperate piviot points allows the sail to change shape and become fuller as the boom is eased forward on to a reach automatically.  As you sheet it in tighter the boom pulls the clew aft and flattens the sail.

3) Only one line is lead aft which is the sheet.  The selftending feature means you can hoist, adjust and forget as the traveler allows hands off tacking.  It is perhaps a good thing that the traveler is missing.  The old Shaefer traveler left allot to be desired and often hung as it traveled across to the other side.  A new ball bearing Harken would be the way to go.

4) Installing new tracks will be difficult as you do not have access to the underside of the deck due to the inner liner. I suspect you will have to install winches as well, all of which adds cost and complication.

Think this over before you start drilling.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, a PO had already recut the staysail, the traveler had already been removed, as have all the running rigging for the staysail boom.  Fortunately, the cockpit already has the two additional winches needed (4 total, 2 per side). All that was left of the self-tending is the pedistal. I just need  to add the track.  I was luckly enough to recently correspond with the owner of Luffin It (doesn't own it anymore) and that 367 had a boomless staysail.  He send me pictures of the locations of the track, which begin about just aft the dorade boxes and between the grab rails and the edge of the coach roof, then run a couple of feet back.

I just need to figure out the athwartship position of the tracks. I"ll just fiddle with the placement until I think it is right, then bolt the tracks down.

It shouldn't be too hard to retrofit the track, I've already remove/rebedded the grabrails and I'm just going to through bolt the track through the desk, core, and liner with some kind of covering on the overhead, or not.
