Paragon Transmission Pearson 365 model number(s)

Sorry to post so many new threads, but I'm trying to break these down so that they're easy to find and reference for other users.

I've come across what looks to be a very clean Paragon transmission that could be just the ticket for spares. Given the state of my V-drive, I'm expecting the fun surprises to continue, so wouldn't mind having this in the bank, as it were. The seller doesn't know much about this unit:  says it's an SA0120, specification number Z7973, ts serial number is ?? 5074, gear ratio 2:1. I'm trying to identify what that is. It looks tantalizingly like my P365's transmission, and I suspect it's at least very close, but can't make sense of the "120". From what I've seen here, our tranny is referred to as an SAOD.  Does anybody know the corresponding numbers off our transmission or what the numbers on this one mean?

My paragon was SAO 10 with 1:1 gear ratio. The reduction gearing is in the V-drive. If you use the one you describe I think you would end up with 4:1 reduction (if  you could just swap trannys). But possibly many intrernals would be compatable for spares.  Jim

Sorry, I misspoke. My tranny was SAOD, I guess for direct drive. The Walter is R-10. Jim

In looking at the Transmission Section S of the Westerbeke Manual that I found in my 365 they show exploded views of 3 Paragon SAO models. The one in the Pearson is the SAOD. Its easily identifiable in that its shorted and has no offset from input to output shaft and there is a 3 bolt flange.  Of the other 2, one has a gear reduction unit bolted to the aft end and the 3rd one is  for direct bolt up to a V drive. All three types have a different P/N output shafts. I would conclude that  all the parts forward of the output shaft are interchangeable with the SAOD.   Pete W

I posted this to Wayne a few minutes ago.....but maybe you might have an answer.

  After having my 1978 Pearson ketch travel at 2.9 mph at 2000 rpm for two day trips, I finally know the problem.  Leaving for a weekend in Dunedin, the forward gear just stopped Friday morning.  Goes in reverse but no go ahead.  I need to have the Paragon SAOD repaired or replaced.  There is a lot of info on the blog about not being able to find parts for a repair.  I tried to remove the tranny but I do not know the trick.  Do I have to move the engine?  I was hoping not to have to mess with the v-drive.  Any words of wisdom?
