Randy,

Are you Wally's friend?  A great guy, we've visited him four times in the Chesapeake. Miss him.  did he sell Salty Dog?

We sail in a windy area (Great south bay of LI), with tight anchorages.  I allow the  proper amount of  scope, at least 5:1 and often more - I have 25' of chain and remainder nylon. Boats nearby allow less and my wife is always afraid of swinging during the night.  I'm going all chain so I can accommodate to my surroundings and my wife can sleep.

At my dock- I always bow in because boat can't handle in reverse with prevailing 15-20 off my stern quarter- my wife has to fend off. I have bent my dolphin strikers often.  I've been using a large round fender off the bow to try to hold of dock. That doesn't always work.  I'm planing on adding a max prop so I can stop better.  A lot cheaper and better than going to power.

I've been convinced to keep Counterpoint. Make some changes in equipment and how we use the boat to accommodate our age. No powerboat in near term.  ,

My 365 ketch  #269 doesn't back down well when I dock bow-in with seasonally heavy wind off my stern quarter. Same engine and drive.  I'm considering a max prop 3 blade.   PYi  wrote: 2 Blade 17" diameter by 12" pitch for a 1 1/8" shaft $1950.00. 3 Blade 17" diameter by 10" pitch for a 1 1/8" shaft $3000.00.

I know there are many newer props of this type for sale since they first came out. Are you happy with yours?  Would you suggest anything else?

Thanks for your advice,

The hose surrounding the drive shaft between the tube encasing the shaft and the packing box has developed a leak at the aft end. The drip is only (very) significant when I'm in gear and engine is at cruising speed. Leak is insignificant when engine is off. I've tried tightening the hose clamps, but whether because of awkward angle or lack of my strength I can't move them. I tried looking with a mirror underneath but because of the water and awkward angle I cant see what's happening.

Has anyone experience this?  Could the hose itself be rupturing? Or do I need more force on the hose clamp screws. Is  running the engine when going out for a sail endangering taking on more water than my bilge pump can handle? Boat is 1979 sloop "Counterpoint"  hull 279.

Thanks for your advice,

Joel

Dale, Thanks for replying. When I try to post a picture I get the following "the upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator"

I turned the JPG to a 16 MB PDF to get under the size limit.

If you would send your  e-mail address to me at  jebecker@optonline.net I'll attach it to my response.

Incidentally what type of windlass do you have?

I know this is not a new subject, but I'd appreciate someone pointing to postings most relevant to my situation, commenting and telling me how to view photos on the 365 site. I've reached the age where my back doesn't want to do the manual lifting so I want to install an electrical windlass.
Counterpoint is a 1979 365 sloop.  I have been using an anchor roller offset  from, but fastened through the teak platform for my 33# Bruce ( see photo of configuration shown on someone else's boat with a Delta).  I'd like to continue this using roller setup so I can break the anchor free using the boat. There is some interference with the dolphin strikers (which I want to retain) so I now have to manually twist the anchor to get it up the last foot.
My questions primarily relate to the selection of a windlass and its location. I know that the dolphin striker situation will have to be modified (perhaps to a "y").  My boatyard, which will do the work has some issues/questions relating to the height of the windlass (vertical? Horizontal?) to clear the cleats; the footprint for getting around on the foredeck is also important.  They're thinking of the Lewmar Profisher 1000 (in order to accommodate a 5/8" rode), a profiser 700 or V700.  Both 700's use ½" rode.
We plan to use the aft house batteries with a heavy copper bus.

I'd appreciate all inputs.
