I am alive still sailing and working (not in that order).

It humbles me that my absence is noticed - thank you.

For the Chesapeake Bay sailors I'd like to throw a plug in for a young organization that has grown from simple idea 3 seasons ago to a note worthy organization - Chesapeake Shorthand Sailing Society (www.chbaysss.org). Inspired and fashioned after the San Francisco Bay Shorthand Sailing Society, CHESSS's mission is to promote singlehanded and doublehanded sailing, sailing skills, and sailing activities in and around the Chesapeake.

We kick off the season with our Bi-Annual General Meeting- Saturday, 3 March @ 11am - 1pm at Union Jack's Pub in Annapolis. Everyone is welcome.

Thank you again for asking - all is well.

Kevin,

Dang that looks nice..... I will NOT be posting a picture of my cabin sole after seeing yours.

OK  - Less Learned.... I spoke with the tech that rebuilt my pump. He used the pump manufactures serial number for setting Max RPM not the Westerbeke spec.... Easy fix with an comment in my customer file (Warranty Issue) I was able to break the seal (paint drop) and adjust the stop on the pump to increase the throttle range of movement until the beast was able to reach a max RPM's of 3,000. The tech knew his mistake as soon as mentioned the RPM numbers.

Same solution for idle, just the other stop had to be adjusted.... This one he could not explain why he set this wrong....

So what was the lesson learned - take the Westerbeke spec sheet with the pump and leave it when using a large diesel repair shop....

Another day and little bit smarter.

Thank you everyone for your help - with a special THANK YOU to Wayne!

The Saga continues...

I finally had a chance to bleed and start the engine. I starts fine, runs nicely but I have two problems:
    1. Idle is at 0 rpms - I have to move the throttle about 1/5  for the engine to reach 500-600 RPM
        the previous idle RPM.
    2. The max RPMs under load or no load is 2,500 not 3,200 (no load) and 3,000 (under load) that I had before.

I was very careful to align the pump with the marks I made before removing.

The throttle control on the pump moves from stop-to-stop so it is not a simple cable adjustment. The throttle lever does not move as far forward (up) as it did before. Once the lever stops I checked the throttle on the pump is tight against the "Max" throttle stop.

Any thoughts - I will call the shop that did the work tomorrow to find out what thoughts they might have on the issue...

Thanks

I agree with Wayne - I looked at used set at Bacon's and was tempted to buy them because of the easy of install design. For occasional use with a light dinghy they would be nice to have. I did not think they would meet my needs

They did not have a cross member to keep the arms locked together or secondary support for the pulpit. Maybe they were not factory or not a complete set. And, I was concerned how they would hold up with a 100 lb inflatable (Avon 10' 2" wood floor) hanging off the davits plus 45lb outboard on the rail...

I ultimately went with a smaller inflatable that I could stow in the locker, inflate on deck, and drop in the water...

Just one sailor's point of view.

The davits were, and still are, pretty flimsy. As Brian pointed out you are much better off in the long run to invest in a proper set of davits from one of the companies he mentioned. While the most expensive, Kato has great reputation.

With you on this one - my smart phone is my friend. I have more pictures of boat systems on my phone than I do of my children. I start every project with 20 to 30 pictures from every possible angle. Most of the pictures are of little or no value, but sometimes there are some "life savers" in the group... Also, as my eyes get older it is much easier for me to zoom "in" to see details than relying on my unassisted vision.

Chandlery / Almost New Staysail Cover - Navy
March 29, 2017, 10:04:15 AM
All,

While cleaning out the "Boat Closet" this weekend I found an almost new staysail cover. I had all new canvas made for Sea Dragon about 12 years ago. I used the staysail cover for one season before adding a roller furler. I have no use for it - make me an offer and it is yours.

Pearson 365/367 Mechanic Shop / Re: Injector Pump Leak

Back from the shop and reinstalled - Pump and injectors rebuilt. Best of all this is one of the few projects that came in under budget.

Thank you Wayne for all the help - install and cleanup took less than 4 hours. As it turned out the hardest part was aligning the drive shaft. I took your advice with the upper inboard bolt. I tapped it to a socket, used a wobble extension, and once it was close I used a magnet to pull it into place.

Now I waiting for launch to prime and start the beast.

Finally got around to removing the injector pump and injectors today.

Wayne thank you for notes and guidance it was very helpful. Next stop is an experienced diesel shop.

I have one question - What the heck was Perkins thinking when they designed the upper allen bolt?
They could not find another 1/2 inch of space around it?

It took me about 4 hours to drain and remove the exhaust and another 3 1/2 hours to remove the injectors and pump.

I think it will all go back together in 3 or so hours. That is if I can ever get the silly allen bolt started... I have no idea how I will get it back in behind the pump unless I can find a 2 year to reach between the pump & engine to position and start the bolt.

Thanks again for you help..

Pete,

I have an agreed value of $50K on an 1981 P367 with BoatUS - annual cost about $650 with restricted sailing grounds.

Dale,

I have Gill boots, gloves, bibs, and jacket. Last spring I received my 2nd Gill replacement jacket (Jacket #3 in 15 years). The Gill jacket (Key West) has a rollup hood that stows in the collar that is rarely ever used. Bothe the bibs and the jacket are yellow (brighter colors).

I wear the jacket the most both when sailing and when ashore. Most of the time, like Wayne, I wear the jacket without the bibs (summer rain storms). Oddly enough I wear the bibs mostly without the jacket for warmth in the early morning hours over shorts with a fleece pullover, shedding layers as the day warms up. And maybe, 1-3 times a year I will wear both the bibs and jacket as a set (early spring March/April and late fall November/December) and mostly for warmth (break the cold winds).

I have worn the gloves maybe 3 times in 15 years and the boots maybe 6 times during the same period.

The one thing I struggle with is a functional hat. I have baseball style hats, Columbia Schooner Bank hat, and a Tilley style hat. The Columbia is my favorite (once I got past the goofy look) but it is not perfect. The large bill provide nice shade but it is a little clumsy when moving around on deck smacking the rigging.  OK maybe I am clumsy and the hat is a victim of poor depth perception, I don't know.  ::)

If I had to do it over, I think I would buy the same gear. While the hood, boots, and gloves are rarely used they are nice when needed. As for Gill, their customer service is great and for the most part the quality is good. I am not sure why I have gone through two (2) jackets in 15 years, but none the less Gill has replaced each at no charge with only one question, "Do you want the same color?".

I hope this helps.

Mike,

My plan when replacing the head sail on Sea Dragon is to replace it with a 95 or 100. This is likely my last season with the 110.

Like Kevin, more often than not I sail with the staysail.

For what it is worth
