Ok I guess I did something wrong but but you got the pics.
Looking at the pic #3 it looks like there is no bronze sleeve but there is nothing but glass.I will do the exploratory surgery and find out where the bolts are located.Post more pics as things progress. Thanks.

  Dale,
The rudder is out and the packing gland is removed. Are you saying that your guess is that the bolts are coming from the bottom of the boat(outside)? I have sand blasted the bottom and it is down to the gelcoat. Should I sand threw the gel to see if there is flat Head screws? From the outside you can see that there is the hull layup then above that and slightly offset there is a bronze sleeve..Bolts are not visible unless under gelcoat.I can post picks if need be...Thanks

Does anyone know how the bolts that hold down the rudder packing gland are attached to the hull? Mine have corroded so bad that there was only half of the bolts left and of course broke off when trying to take them off.Packing gland has a plate that has four holes in it for the bolts to come up thru. After the gland was removed there are four bolt stubs sticking out of the fiberglass hump and a hole with what looks like a bronze sleeve that goes down thru the hump of glass to meet up with the hull layup. Are the sleeve and the bolts attached to each other by a bronze plate buried in the glass? Are they just buried in the glass? Are they U bolts buried in the glass????Thanks.

Not absolutely sure but I think after looking at the slugs on my main sail they are 3/4". I looked them up at westmarine and they appear to be part #2690790.(bainbridge $8.99 pk of 4) Hope this helps.

Hello to all and hope you had a good 4th of July, now back to work for me.
Ordered and received the parts to rebuild the 4-108.Have sent off the parts and peices to the machinist to have him press in what needs to be pressed. However now that the red beast is out of the way I have removed the fuel tank. There were small pin holes in it so I took it to the welder to fix it up.He welded the holes and put 1/4 sacrificial strips were it comes in contact with the wood.It is a aluminum tank aprox 1/4" thick and about the same size as the original. He couldn't plug all the holes to pressure test it.If I can I will but do not know how many pounds of air to pressurize it too and how long should I leave it pressurized.Has anyone ever had to do this?

Thank you for all who replied.Got a lot of information.I will only be putting on a larger alternator.I want to leave all the power for the prop not rob it for generator, water maker, freezer plate etc...
I should mention that my 22' Oday's name is PASSINGWIND she has been completely redone to the point that I could'nt do anymore. To keep going on her I would have to put on wind generator and radar. This I think would be overkill don't you? She already has 500 amp hrs of battery with a 100watt solar panel off the back. I have had this boat for about 24 years I also have a sister ship that I've parted out to make one great boat.(& one junker). You will be asking why so much power onboard well there is a Tiller pilot,Raymarine C80,Fishfinder/Depth,Sirius Weather radio,fridge/freezer etc...energy suckers. She is set up to be a cruiser but there is only a cuddy cabin which limits the amount of time you can cruise comfortably. And that would be coastal cruising.
I think now that I know that the 4-108 will be enough power I will order the parts and get myself going.Again thank you and I'm sure I'll have many more questions before I'm done.

John & Shari Taylor picked up hull #292(Dec 08) after it went through hurricane Ike. Yes she had some damage. Engine was frozen and 6 to 7 feet of hull to deck damage (looks like it banged up against a piling). It has some other miscellaneous damage such as bent stern rail, life line stantions, scratches, etc. The current list of owners shows this boat to be owned by a couple in St. Augustine, FL. I bought this boat from a salvage yard and it had Texas documentation on it. It has now been moved to Englewood, FL. I have begun repairs but, still have a ways to go. I have removed the W-40 and have broken it down. It needs a complete rebuild.  Before I do this, I have a question. Is the W-40 enough power for this boat or should I scrap it and get a bigger engine? I don't want to go through the trouble, time and expense of rebuilding this engine if the boat will be under powered when I am finished. We plan to move aboard and cruise the world when the boat is finished.
