I finally took the plunge and purchased (mail order) a Lewmar Pro Series 1000 for Polaris, a 1979 365 Ketch.

Now I'm looking to plan out the installation.  Any model specific advise?

I do recall seeing a hole thru the cone....I'll give that a shot.

I'd be interested in what they're asking for it...

...in the meantime, I'll continue my quest for disassembly instructions.  Unfortunately, I'm not mechanically inclined enough to deduce (from the exploded diagram) how to go about getting past the clutch cone in order to remove the cover plate...

OK - so I removed the SL Hyspeed from the bow, took it home and tried to open it.  I was able to remove the clutch nut and gypsy from the starboard side and the set and washer from the port side but that's where things ground to a halt.  I can't remove the cover without first removing the clutch cone from the mainshaft, and I don't know how to do THAT.  Any suggestions?  I think something may be loose (or a missing spring or something) inside.  SOMETIMES the gears engage and the shaft turns when the handle is cranked and, at other times, the movement is only in one direction, giving way to the original position when the handle is moved forward.  Bottom line:  I need to crack it open and see what I'm up against.  Any help would be appreceated.

I'd sure be interested to see photos of your bow thruster...did you install it yourself or have a yard work it up for you?

OK - I need to pick your brains, all you long-time Pearson 365 owners.  How in the heck do you back up your boats????

Helming out new (1979) 365 around the small boat harbor this weekend was somewhat of a nightmare...easily controled in forward, does fine in reverse (as long as you want the back of the boat to vear to port, but if you want the to back towards starboard...good luck!!!!  Absolutely wouldn't answer the helm unless you had a good speed up... not possible in tight quarters...made backing into our slip impossible (for us).

Hints???

Turns out mine is a S/L Hyspeed.  I've removed it and will be discecting it this week looking for the problem...more to follow.

Did you ever get your preventer mounted?  How did it work out?  Looking for options myself...

Is there a tool to open (screw out?) the plastic inspection window on the water tanks?  Mine are in there pretty tight and I'm afraid if I try to force them, they'll simply break.

Marc,

Did you add the clamshell one?  Is it simply a matter of drilling a hole and clamping it in place during the haulout?

Good on you, Rich!  However, getting Polaris was a little harder on our pocketbook than we expected so, for now at least, we'll be attempting to repair what we've got...as soon as we figure out what IT is...hence the question - what manual windlass did Pearson NORMALLY install on their 365's?

Does anyone know what the "standard" manual winch that Pearson used on it's 365 Ketches in 1979?  I couldn't find any markings on mine and it is in need of some work to put it operational again...

Follow-Up:

I called the folks at Borg Warner who, in turn, referred me to a dealership in Everett, WA.  He said that, unless I was sailing at 30mph or greater, the RPMs generated by the propeller free-wheeling would cause no problems (as long as both the V-Drive and transmission had oil).  I told him that if we ever reached 30mph it wouldn't be for long.

I think I'll NOT try to install a shaft break (or use a pipe wrench).  Seems to me that both solutions to a non-problem would be inviting trouble.

I am now getting intimately familiar with our new 1979 Pearson 365 Ketch, POLARIS.  I have a question for the more enlightened:  Is it normal (or desirable) for the propeller to continue to spin when the engine is shut off and the boat is sailing along?  It doesn't seem to matter whether or not the transmission (a Borg-Warner Velvet Drive) is in reverse, nuetral or forward - the shaft keeps spinning, working the V-Drive as it rotates...Polaris is NOT equiped with any kind of shaft brake that I can see.
