Title: Bow defect?
Post by: S/V Laelia on November 21, 2011, 10:29:51 PM
I am a new member hoping to buy a 365 currently lying in Sausalito. The owner made some comment about a known problem with weakness in the bow (core?) that he had remedieid. I haven't seen any other references to this problem. Does anyone know anything about it?

This site is great! I have spent hours combing through posts and learned a lot. My thanks to everyone who has contributed.

The core in my bow where the bow pulpit pulpit stanchions bolts are is no longer firm on my Pearson. I cannot sit on my bow pulpit to hank on a jib. It's very unsafe at the moment.

The remedy will mean removing bow pulpit. After sealing off the holes and gaps from the inside I will put a small funnel in each hole on the deck. Into these funnels I will pour penetrating 3M macropoxy 646. The viscous epoxy penetrates the fibers and restores the the strength to rotted cores. After the epoxy sets up I'll redrill the holes and add new backing plates and SS bolts.  I've seen this techniques use to restore the the plywood interior and hence the strength on an old plywood glass hulled trimaran.

Here's a data sheet

Its on my list of task for 2012 so I'll be getting back to you with details as they develop.

Good luck,   Pete W old hull #6

Pete- Sounds good. I have questions:
1- Does the core have to be dry, and how dry?
2- How far will the epoxy migrate through the rotted core? Therefore, how close together do the access holes need to be?
3- Will performance differ between balsa and plywood cores?
4- The data sheets do not mention this application???
I have used this fix under stansion bases, with West, but not larger deck areas.
The Gougeon Bros./West system outlines a similar sounding fix. Previous owner of Talaria peeled up a couple areas of deck, replaced the core, and laid the deck back down. Apparently all these methods work, all with reservations. Please post results, anyone who proceeds. Good luck. Jim

It turns out the owner was talking about the anchor platform. It has been upgraded by adding some large diameter SS tubing to support the teak platform.

Now I'm gonna have to check out this additional problem you mentioned. I just had the boat surveyed but I was floating in and out during the survey and didn't actually see the surveyor checking out the bow pulpit.

Thanks for the responses.
