Here ya go feller's. Here's my instruction for sewing up welted, zippered box cushions from scratch. Written by a real novice for other novices. With lots of pictures too.
After going through 2 spools of Sunstop UV resistant thread and a gazillion pin pricks all 8 cushions have been recovered on my boat. You will need about $300 worth of material to do this job. I have no idea what paying someone who's not working in some sweatshop to do this would have cost.
Any questions , please let me know. Regards, Pete W.
Thanks. looks like alot of work.
Pat
Pretty work.
Pete,
WOW! a great read. You apparently have done some of this before or that reference book that you mentioned at the end is very good.
This is all very helpful, and your cushions look great.
Thanks so much.
One item you failed to mention was finding a suitable fabric that one likes, is durable and is affordable. I have been looking for 2 years now. I have saved pictures of other cushions and the fabric but have been unable to locate that particular fabric. I have found fabric that I liked and then found out it was $40 a yard. Hunting on the web is useless as when the sample arrives it is nothing like the screen picture. Fabric stores are both a maze and a nightmare to search through.
I guess I will have to keep looking although I have a sample on one of my existing cushions that I like and it is reasonably priced.
Thanks again...
Dale
Dale,
Thanks for your positive feedback. My workmanship was not flawless and my stitching wandered a bit, but compared to what was there, I'm calling it a huge improvement. Also freshening up the old foam has given me that new boat smell.
My choice of fabric was based on color/pattern and mostly price since I was unsure how well it would turn out. I bought discontinued material at a outlet store called Tempe Sales for $8/yard. How it will hold up to wear and sunlight is TBD. I did find it to be a synthetic fiber that will melt. I misjudged how much I would need by almost half and when I went back to get more the bolt was not in stock. Luckily they had moved it to the quick sale area for $4/ yard. A close call that turned into a bonus. Pete
Very nice job! You must be very pleased. Doing your own cushions saves a bunch, and with a little extra material you can repair or renew areas that get the most use. I have done my dinette 3 times with the same material. Next time I may have to change it. Like Dale said a lot of time was spent going through fabric books, when the store wouldn't give me a discount I contacted the manufacture and worked out a volume deal. (before internet)
