Title: Paragon Oil
Post by: POG on February 19, 2011, 11:49:52 AM
Going back over old discussions there are posts debating or recommending using SAE 30 in the Paragon gear box instead of automatic transmission fluid.  Evidently service mechanics have been recommending this and some of you are following the practice.

What is the final verdict?  What is the heavier oil supposed to do?  Make clutch slippage less likely?

Carl:
My tranny was rebuilt last year. The shop said to use SAE 30 weight, as does all of the documentation I have on the tranny.

The prior owner of my boat has used 30 weight for the ten years he has owned the boat. I cannot say if this is good or bad but it does still work.   Would these folks know? "Great Lakes Power" in Ohio? When I googled Paragon it took me to them.

I don't know about the Paragon, but the Velvet Drive definitely uses ATF.

I don't know about the Velvet drive but the Paragon has a planetary-gear in it, and ATF is a fluid not a oil! To give ATF a greasing capability the manufacture put some gliding additives in, These additives do there work a little bit different then oil and they stick also to the clutch plates, so they will slip, I replaced the ATF with SAE30 and so far no problems any more.

Thanks all, particularly Dutchie.  I am switching to SAE 30.
