Title: P365 sailplan - Getting POG out of coma and ready for Pacific crossing
Post by: POG on December 13, 2010, 12:40:29 PM
Hi everybody.

This is my first communication since buying POG P365 hull # 118.

The boat was delivered to its first owner in So. Cal. in the spring of 1977.  It appears to have had little use, though somewhere along the line around 1989/90 someone spent quite a bit of money installing a number of cruising related equipment, though the project must have fizzled out before getting under way.  The sails are still original from 1977 and actually useable!

I circumnavigated in the early 1970ies.  Then spent ten years in the marine business building boats and the Monitor self steering gear, which my partner is still happily making and selling after we parted ways in 1987.  I have done a lot more cruising since in exotic places (Alaska, Greenland and the Northwest Passage.  Solo to Tahiti in my Yankee 30 etc).

I have been restoring my 365, practically full time, since buying her in the spring this year.  I will write  about this extensively later on as I am sure my solutions to some inherent problems in the design could be of interest.

At this stage I wonder if anyone out there has a decent sailplan that one could work off or know where one can be had .  I can make my own from actual measurements on the boat but time is of the essence if I am going to leave  San Francisco for the Marquesas early April.

Thanks for your input.

Carl,
I'll be the first to welcome you to the club.

Also, I'm in Alameda on my newly acquired and as yet un-sailed 365 sloop, and will be very interested in answers to your question, since I bought 'er to go cruising with or without a partner.

Last, I have no one available to sail with on the bay or out the Gate. Please let me know if you have an interest in spending time with me here on Seascape.

Very best,
Mark

Thank you for replies Ed, Mark and Slokat,

I am such a computer non-savant that I am sweating blood to understand how to use the P 365 site and post something on it.

I actually did not realize until a few minutes ago that i had managed to post my initial message and had received replies.  Can anyone tutor me in how I post some questions on the mechanical forum...?

Ed.  Very kind of you to offer to send me a sail plan.  I have since made my own as I did not believe that I had succeded in getting my message posted.

Thanks also to SLOKAT.

Mark - I am flat out busy to get my boat prepared for departure early April.  If I miss the deadline I will be out of sync with the seasons and will have to wait another year - and at 67 I don't have that much time in the bank to squander and really have to get away this year.  So, no time for social Bay sailing, unfortunately.

Carl,

To post, go to the section that you want to post under (in your case you mentioned Mechanical) from the main menu.  Off to the right just above the blue bar will be a set of tabs.  Click on the New Topic one and you are good to go.

Dale,

Thanks for the advice - but for the life of me I cannot find anything "above the blue bar" (of which there are more than one) that reads "new topic".

Very frustrating.  What is going on?

Couldn't copy the blue bar- all I got was the text. When you enter the Mechanic Shop or any of the forums, there is a blue bar just above the top thread. On the right side, you should see the tabs above, except they will be blue also. Click new topic and you should be good to go.

Carl,

On the home page, click on the  Pearson General Non-Mechanical System Maintenance and Repair.
At the top of all of the subjects there is a blue bar that says - Subject, Started By, Replies, Views, Last Post.
At the right end of that blue bar, just above, there is another list of tabs which says - Mark Read, Notify, New Topic, Post New Poll.
Select the New Topic tab and you are ready to go.  If you can not see the - Mark Read, Notify, etc, you must log in with your user name and password first.
Hope this helps...

Hey guys, this is a little off the immediate subject line but I just found the original blue print of the sail plan for my sloop. If anyone is interested let me know.

I do not need the whole plan but I am interested in the length of the boom if it is listed, or the length of the foot of the main sail sail if it's not. Our boat is a modified ketch that was reconfigured early on to a sloop rig by the 1st owner (were #3). I been told that the boom was from a 365 sloop, but than I was told a lot of things. Most just chalked up to 35 years of nobody remembers. Any way a confirmation of length would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gordon

Sorry for the delay, Gordon. According to the drawings, the exact length of the boom is not clearly marked. What is drawn is a distance of 13' - 0" for the "E" component of the sail configuration, with the main sail being 247 sq. feet. Does this help? If not, let me know.

Gordon,

I just went out and measured my boom (1976 ketch).   The length of the aluminum extrusion without the endcaps is 140" or 11.66 ft.  Sailrite lists the E dimension for a ketch at 11.75 ft.  They list the E dismenion for the sloop at 13.00 ft, so with a little mathematical interpolation, your extrusion should be approximately 13.09 feet or 157".

Remember the dimensions that I am talking about is just for the raw aluminum extrusion.

Hope this helps.
