Title: deck plate stuck
Post by: RockysMate on December 04, 2010, 09:29:51 PM
The deck plate to the emergency tiller is stuck hard.  I can't get the wrench that fits into the holes on top of it to budge at all, even hitting it pretty hard with a hammer.  I'm pretty sure it is aluminum.

You can try warming it with a propane torch, then let it cool and see if it will move. Heat and penetrating oil will get most things loose. Go easy on the heat. The plate will expand then contract. It may take several attempts and some patience.

After trying everything I could think of I finally just removed mine and replaced it with a Beckson Deck Plate/Inspection Port.  It was roughly the same size and you can get it in a non-skid finish.  Fill the old screw holes and drill new ones and you're good to go.  It even looks better.

When I get on her at the end of December I will try the heat first.  If no luck or continued problems will consider replacing. Thanks for the great help!

Mine did the same thing and NOTHING would un-stick it.  I found a new stainless one on E-bay for around $30 that fit like a charm.

Somebody working on the boat when I wasn't there got the plate off, I don't know how.  I think I want to replace it.  Anyone know what size it is?  Remote boat repair and maintenance is HARD!!
