The Perking 4.108 in my Pearson 365 makes a lot of noise and I would like to figure some way to quiet it a little. It doesn't look like it would be very practical or easy to build an effective enclosure for the engine, so I was wondering whether sound deadening paint applied to the bottom of the cockpit sole and other internal surfaces might help. Has anyone had any experience with this? I know the best solution is to just stop the engine and sail, but I really would appreciate any suggestions for engine noise reduction.

Mike- I (and others here) have lined the forward cabinetry around the engine and the underside of the cockpit sole and seat lockers with sound absorbing tiles to quite good effect. It does not silence the beast, but conversation and music become possible. The tiles I used are from Sailing Solutions and have a very aggressive adhesive back and are 12 inches square. I also thought of lining the panels between the engine and cockpit lockers, but this would make removing those panels problematic. It has been two years with no problems and I would definitely do it again. Jim
Well, I decided to go ahead and get a gallon of Silent Running SR 1000 and give it a try. My expectations aren't terribly high. I will be happy if it will just reduce the vibration and noise a little bit. I'll report on the results in a week or two.

Any results yet? I have also been considering this.
I did the tiles from Sailing Solutions & I am very happy I am going to do the panels at the side of the engine to sail lockers and I am also working on a design for an aft engine bulk head to apply the tile to also.

How many tiles did you end up using?
I ended up using around 18 tiles.
