Unfortunately the beautifully looking aluminum fuel tank on my 367 cutter Ebb Tide has a leak, and its somewhere underneath inside the retaining woodwork which is now black, saturated and permeates the foul smell of diesel throughout the boat. :(
I am toying with the idea of replacing both the wood work and the tank with two:

Has anyone experience in this field, I'll be making up a dummy tank from scrap wood and going through the process of feeding them down through the lockers, one each side. obviously I'll have to cut the old tank out first, a task I am quite looking forward too this coming weekend. At present the lockers are full of diesel containers from emptying the freshly filled tank before it all ended up in the bilge.
Has anyone done this themselves? - What are the pitfalls of plastic? Many auto manufacturers are going the way of plastic these days. Should I just go with one day tank and possibly a bladder holding tank? so little space !! :-\
I have owned Ebb Tide for just over a year and don't wish to rush the repairs and upgrades she needs - for I know she is a work in progress - but I need to get the pair of us out sailing again and soon, especially with Harvest Moon aproaching :).
Hey Shacklepin,
Do a search on fuel tank. Several others have made posts before, and they included tank dimensions, draawings, etc that should al be helpful. I think they even listed some manufacturers that build them custom, to exactly fit where the old ones were.
Does anyone have a source for the view glass built into the cockpit sole. I removed and took a look at it, and it looks like it will be a big pain in the rear to just do the glass, as it is held on by a corroded retaining ring....
Just replace it with a clear plastic Beckson deck plate.
