Cylinder liners.

11K seems high to me. I would buy the parts and build the W-40 myself, but then I worked for a Caterpillar dealer for nearly 20 years- I've done it before...

Ray, you have been holding out on us! Seeing as Cat bought
perkins, that would make you a factory Perkins tech!
Our factory Perkins/Cat tech. So... from now on any questions about diesels are yours.

As for the Beta question, Beta is a marinized Kabota and they make a fine unit.  So the only question is the $11k.  New engine and trani, pull the old, modify the bunks, new mounts, set the new, revise the exhaust, new engine control panel, new wiring, modify shift linkage, throttle linkage, possibly modify the driveshaft, align. reprop, prime, start, run, set the boat back in the water, warranty.  A bit rich for me but probably not out of the question.

Yeah, I had ample opportunity to learn all about Perkins engines, but was not really interested. (Who wants to learn about those little things?) I was into big horsepower. If it didn't make a thousand horsepower or better, I wasn't interested. I really liked engine rooms where you could feel the thunder of each cylinder firing. I can still hear all those ponies running, but now they sound like crickets...
Still, I finished up there as a marine analyst- a marine technical troubleshooter. We sized coolers, props (whacha got vs whatcha need), engine room ventilation systems, fuel tanks, ect, ect, ect. Final exam- we were "given" a pair of engines. We had to design an engine room and support systems that met all their needs. We usually got roped with vibration issues too. Heh, heh, Guess what happens when you put a pair of V8's in an aluminum crew boat with 4:1 gears and 4 bladed props? It was better than a weight reducing machine... Who woulda thunk it? Whoever schemed that one up didn't need to be around any more boats.
Ah... war stories- I could go on and on.
So, while I am fairly knowledgeable about diesels in general, my Perkins specific knowledge is a bit thin. But the same principles apply whether it's big and yellow or small and red.

I've checked this option out and the $11,000.00 is just the start can you believe I've had two quotes of $20,000.00 +- for the install and modifications - forget it unless you have deep pockets or lots of skills

When I bought Impossible Dream, the old Perkins had a blown rod which went through the engine wall.  I had to replace it.  I did install a Beta marine engine BV1505 now relabeled Beta 38.
I bought the engine without the gear box and I kept the original SAOD transmission.  I later had to replace it with a Velvet drive, but this is another story.  I was on the hard, I had the them remove the old engine Which I had previously disconnected and drop the new unit in the hole, but I did the rest of the installation.
I bought the shallow pan model with the Raised Exhaust.  I had to replace the wet exhaust muffler because it's location did not work well with the layout of the engine.  Beta marine did supply me with a Vetus unit.
The only draw back is that as advertised the engine is design to be serviced from the back(opposite of the shaft.  Since the P365 uses a V drive all the serviceable parts must be access through the cockpit locker...  Beside that the engine has worked great once I learned to keep up with the Fuel cleanliness and filters.
Initial cost 2001 was around $7500 (engine no Gear box).

Caterpillar used to have a note on all the heavy equipment fuel caps. It was cast into the aluminum cap. It said "Buy clean fuel and keep it clean". If you do that, you eliminate about 80% of your problems with a diesel engine.

we have a beta marime 1505 on Ohana. that was one real selling point for us. The engine has performed well and we have no complaints.
The service is a issue but the engine is in backwards!!!! Deal with it.
When I give her full throttle the bow just about stands up. ( maybe not quite )
Keep the filters and oil clean.

I replaced the 4-108 Westerbeake 40 with the Westerbeake 44 which is a Mitsubitsu 39 HP. It was a difficult installation with a new V drive. It was well worth the cost and trouble. I took Lond winded to Georgetown in the Bahamas and back mostly under power.

I hve rebuilt the perkins 4-108 diesel before. It is a very basic and solid machine. It has old fashon seals that leak and the parts are getting harder to get.

11k for the engine and the install seems like a good deal to me. If the guy who wants to install it is named Joe D. send me a private message before you go ahead with it. I have first hand experience with his work.

I have a complete P365 Drive system for sale. It includes a recently overhauled 4-108 engine, Paragon gearbox, RV10 Vee drive and `17 inch propeller. All were working albeit old style when I replaced it. Call me at 75 489 2246 for anyone interested and can use these componants.
