Title: Stinky Fresh Water
Post by: Lola on August 12, 2009, 08:26:49 AM
Ahoy!
Within about 2 weeks of last use of water from fresh water tanks, I turned on the tap in the galley and the water was very smelly. I left the tap running for a while, all three tanks w/ valves open and the smell got a bit less but still there - you would not want to use it to wash your hands. I*'m not sure how much water remains in the tanks.

What do you suggest? Thanks!

Your tanks must be dirty, or you took on bad water.

If the tanks are dirty, the 365s being fairly old now, the best remedy is to cut them open, fully clean and sand the inside, then apply epoxy paint safe for drinking water. ..and reglass the top.

good luck.

Any recommendations, based on experience, for a safe, potable water tank coating? We've been looking... most are rated for very large tanks.

The water in any tank will turn smelly if it is left to sit in the tank for a period of time.

Every few months I add about 1/4 cup of bleach to each tank.  You can leave the beach in the tanks, and the water should be fine to use.  We only drink bottled water on board, so the tank water is really only used for dishes, showers, and the cockpit washdown.  The bleach will kill off any bacteria in the tank.   After that you should have a pretty clean system for a few months.

You may have blisters on the walls within your water tanks that leach glycol into the water, glycol smells bad. Flushing  your tanks several times with fresh water and sanitizing them with bleach is a good ideal. If you plan to cook and drink your boats tank water, you must use appropriate water filters. I cut the top of the starboard tank took out the baffles and installed a plastismo bladder tank for cooking and emergency drinking water. I use bottle water for drinking. Good luck. Baron

The company I work for has an industrial cleaning division and they use what they call a three "D" water jet nozzle to clean the inside of storage tanks, this is done at high pressure and volume but I would think there should be a way to find a smaller version, I have included a link to one of the suppliers of the nozzles maybe they could point you in the right direction to be able to clean the insides of the tanks without cutting th etop out.

Just a thought.
