John & Shari Taylor picked up hull #292(Dec 08) after it went through hurricane Ike. Yes she had some damage. Engine was frozen and 6 to 7 feet of hull to deck damage (looks like it banged up against a piling). It has some other miscellaneous damage such as bent stern rail, life line stantions, scratches, etc. The current list of owners shows this boat to be owned by a couple in St. Augustine, FL. I bought this boat from a salvage yard and it had Texas documentation on it. It has now been moved to Englewood, FL. I have begun repairs but, still have a ways to go. I have removed the W-40 and have broken it down. It needs a complete rebuild. Before I do this, I have a question. Is the W-40 enough power for this boat or should I scrap it and get a bigger engine? I don't want to go through the trouble, time and expense of rebuilding this engine if the boat will be under powered when I am finished. We plan to move aboard and cruise the world when the boat is finished.
Welcome to the site!
We are currently out cruising on our P365 in Mexico and are very pleased with the W-40 as plenty of Power to move us along. We cruise at 2000RPMs and make 5kts...and let me tell you....we have raised the waterine and have LOTS of cruising junk aboard!
Again....welcome to the site, you will find lots of great people and information here!
Welcome aboard Passing Wind (wow, so many joke possibilities....). Funny, we moved everything off of our boat into the house to protect it against Ike. Boat came through fine. House had two feet of salt water and sewage cruise through. Got all of my projects, and pretty much everything else in the house, considering it was a 1 story home. Builder is putting the finishing touches on, and should be out of there by next week....Not sure which I would rather have had the damage to....
Welcome!
I think the W40 is certainly enough power and is a reliable OLD engine.
IMO if you are planning to cruise the world it would be better to have a professional repower, new Yanmar, which will give you the same horsepower for less weight, more fuel efficient, and will be able to get service and parts anytime, anywhere.
Full disclosure: I had my 4-108 replace with a rebuilt 4-107. I sail locally, and got a good deal on the swap.
Regards,
Marc
The W40 is a Perkins block 37 hp engine. It is certainly adequate, possible overpowered, for the 365. We have a 31 hp Westerbeke 35D3 powering Phantom and we have plenty of power. If you are going to power a lot of equipment directly off the engine, then more hp may be desirable.
Thank you for all who replied.Got a lot of information.I will only be putting on a larger alternator.I want to leave all the power for the prop not rob it for generator, water maker, freezer plate etc...
I should mention that my 22' Oday's name is PASSINGWIND she has been completely redone to the point that I could'nt do anymore. To keep going on her I would have to put on wind generator and radar. This I think would be overkill don't you? She already has 500 amp hrs of battery with a 100watt solar panel off the back. I have had this boat for about 24 years I also have a sister ship that I've parted out to make one great boat.(& one junker). You will be asking why so much power onboard well there is a Tiller pilot,Raymarine C80,Fishfinder/Depth,Sirius Weather radio,fridge/freezer etc...energy suckers. She is set up to be a cruiser but there is only a cuddy cabin which limits the amount of time you can cruise comfortably. And that would be coastal cruising.
I think now that I know that the 4-108 will be enough power I will order the parts and get myself going.Again thank you and I'm sure I'll have many more questions before I'm done.
