Yesterday I removed the injectors, high pressure fuel pump and exhause manafold. I'm having the fuel pump rebuilt as a preventative measure before heading out cruising for a few years. To access the pump, the exhause manafold needed to come out and after seeing the condition of some of the piping, I'm glad I removed it. Talk about fun!

Rich, I just went through the same process about 2 months ago. I also replaced the oil lines from the filter to the cooler. There also was a smaller line running over to a pressure guage. It's a snap to replace them now. Only part to worry about when reinstalling the pump is lining up the timing marks. Bleeding the fuel injector pump and then the injectors was a worry, but after doing it, it's a snap. If you get hung up, give me a shout.
PS - When going back with the exhaust piping, dont buy it from Home Depot, etc. It's cold dipped cr@p. Go to an good industrial supplier and get a high grade of galvanized pipe. Cost just a few more $ but will lots 5x as long.

I am in the process of replacing the riser piping on my W40. Everthing in my setup looks identical to Rich's except for the veritcal pipe between the 90 degree elbows. Mine is 9" for some reason - his looks to be 3 or 4". On my boat the mixing elbow is almost touching the cockpit floor, and actually does if a heavy person stands right over it in the cockpit. Is there any reason I can't use a shorter piece like Rich's? Do you have a siphon break in the raw water line before it enters the elbow? I do not and maybe this is the difference?

No siphon break in mine. The flow comes from the exit of the heat exchanger and then to the mixing elbow fitting. I don't see any reason why you couldn't shorten it up a bit.
