Hello all.
Has anyone replaced their standing rigging recently? Any experiences to share? I have the original rig on #223, and it is a bit on the sketchy side. I have the opportunity to replace it, and I would like to hear anything to consider.
Thanks
I too have what appears to be the factory standing rigging. Last year (our first with the boat) we broke the center threaded section on the inner forestay turnbuckle that goes below deck. The center section on the Navtec turnbuckle broke without warning and with no outward visiable signs. The treaded portion parted down inside of the center wrench flat section. It did not show any signs of rust. We were lucky as this failure was not major. After inspecting the rest of the turnbuckles on the boat, it looked no different. This has prompted me to replace all of the cap shrouds this winter as if one of these let go, you would loose a mast at the spreaders. Next year I will replace the lowers. Eventually I will replace the main backstay pair as these are lightly loaded and if one broke I a hoping little would happen.
I am going to go with the open body style.

I just replaced all of my chainplates. When we took the first one out, it was covered in rust, one of the bolts fell apart, and another was deformed. I checked, and all 8 chainplates for the main, as well as the four for the mizzen were rusty. I had them refabbed a few at a time, so that I would not have to drop the sticks just for this. Here is the sequence my rigger had me use:
1. Forward and aft lowers. These were all 1/4 inch plate, and were all identical in size. my rigger had me do 1 forward and 1 opposite side aft lower first, leaving the other two on until the first two were replaced to prevent any mast pump.
2. Resnug all lowers, then loosen backstay, and then do uppers and backstays. Uppers and backstay chainplates are identical (3/8").
3. resnug all main mast stays, and do the mizzen. Don't have the sequence for you, since mine was already down for radar. Used the exact same material for uppers and lowers on mizzen that we used for lowers on main.
