Could we revisit the discussion of installed a windlass and strengthening the anchor platform on the P365 ketch and cutter?
Questions:
1. Where to install the windlass? (On the cutter there is very little room just aft of the anchor platform due to the position of the inner forestay.)
2. What kind of windlass? (Vertical, horizontal, drum and gypsy or gypsy only, brand, model, etc.)
3. Where to reposition the bow cleats? (Again, not much room aft of the anchor platform.)
4. How to strengthen the anchor platform?
Please post pictures here, or send pictures to me at
rchrdm@earthlink.netThanks!
Here are two quick photos I have showing the anchor platform bracing.

I am installing a Sea Tiger 555 on Phantom. The hause hole is just forward of the anchor compartment bulkhead and the aft bolts will be over the foot of the v-berth. There are several inches between the cleats and the windlass. The horizontal windlass is usually preferred because it is easier to get power to drive it(manual). I prefer manual since to several friends having electric ones burn up or malfunction in other ways.
Thanks, Jim. Are you leaving the anchor platform as is and mounting the windlass aft of it? Do you have pictures yet?
I have the cutter model and there is not enough room aft of the existing anchor platform. So I will need to move the cleats and put the windlass on the anchor platform, I expect. Thanks for the comments on horizontal windlasses.
Do you plan to reinforce the anchor platform?
Jim
Is the Sea Tiger 555 still available? Where is it sold?
A company in England still makes the Sea Tiger, priced around 1000 GBP. I purchased mine used through Sailorman.com. I was very pleased with the service.
Try "John McMaster" <J.mcmaster@ntlworld.com>
I have an 82 ketch rig.
I installed a Lofrans horizontal dual barrel, RH chain gyspsy / LH rode barrel on mine.
There's plenty of room with the cleats removed. I can't speak to the cutter rig.
I moved (replaced) the cleats off the back side of the bow sprit platform and located them on the wood tow rail between the fore peak stanchions so I could cross the bow lines just in front of the winldass. Someone in the past installed 2 deck chain flanges/covers for either side of the chain box and I lucked out there's only about 4-1/2 distance from the tangent of the aft side of the barrel / gypsy to feed the line / chain thru the deck.
If you move the cleats the original Pearson 4 bolt pattern cleat will not work. You will have to change them to a 2 bolt inline design due to the space (width) to be able to drill the holes thru on the top side to be inside of the deck/hull mold so you can put a back plate and the nuts back on them from inside. It's tight!!! But there is room.
My Lofrans (manual) came off the internet. I paid $650.00 for it, no tax and the company I used paid the freight it was an outstanding deal. The only thing you have to do is make sure the Gypsy is made to fit the chain type you have. You specify that when you order it. i just took a link to West Marine and they identified what it was.
The only other thing I want to eventually do is strenghten the bow sprit some time in the future. I've been eye balling that project. Any one have any good idea's. I'm figuring a single S.S. rod (1" dia) affixed between the sprit underside back to the hull with a fit flange and bolted thru the hull.
I shortened the bowsprit eneough so the tip of a 35# Delta would easily clear the hull. This seems to be strong enough to weigh the anchor. The remaining length is maybe 12".
