Title: Westerbeke 40 - 365 ketch engine noise
Post by: Jordan on October 04, 2020, 10:10:17 PM
This is my first boat. I've tried taking her out 3 times, and succeeded twice. I'm in south florida, and have 3 bridges to get to the ocean (which I can pull off in 30 minutes if I plan right) over got the westerbeke 40, with a 4.108 (I think). Injector pump yes been rebuilt, injectors replaced. Fuel filters, oil filter as well. Even upgraded the belt to a green stripe.

Holy hell she's loud below. And the sink of diesel lasts for at least 6 days. Is that normal? Or do I have a dumb ass super power of an acute sense of smell?

Shouldn't smell diesel at all. Check the exhaust pipe for cracks You have a water lift exhaust which should muffle the exhaust sound. Do you have water coming out of the exhaust pipe? You should. You have a v-drive so you have a couple of shafts spinning which can add to the noise. Hard to determine if the sound is normal or there is something wrong from a text.

Yeah, I don't think it's the v drive spinning. I identified that sound when sailing. It's not too bad. I do have plenty of water coming out of the exhaust, but I guess I can try doing a closer look. I also do still have some exposed holes to the cockpit lockers, but it seems like it shouldn't be that loud. I'll do an in depth inspection of the exhaust and check it's connection to the block. Also, I'll probably redo that old insulation on the engine bay door.

It is a loud boat.  I replaced motor mounts and sound insulated to marginal success.

Check the exhaust manifold for exhaust leaks.  It came off when your pump was rebuilt.  That could be a cause of both noise and smell.  Did they use new gaskets?  All nuts tight?

BTW, get a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor if you have a smell.  Exhaust leaks into the cabin can kill you.  Not a bad thing to have in any case.

I'll be honest, I may have stumbled across this as I actually researched the exhaust system, but I didn't think of it. The better half was leaving for Walmart when this message came in. I read it to her, and she came back with one. Now, I looked at it, and I'm not a huge fan of the thresholds (within 4 minutes @ the highest concentration), so I'm going to buy a better one, but we have one. And apparently, MXT started reading up on it, and she keeps coming back with awful stories in the news. I thought about it with propane, and decided not to have it in the cabin (just a grill outside). I doubt it's bad enough to mess with us, but we may have been poisoning our cats when we went out. So that may have saved the lives of the cats. Thanks.
