Title: Bug Screens
Post by: Dale Tanski on February 07, 2017, 12:30:30 PM
Does one need bug screens in Maine?  I think one of you wonderful people said yes, or was it no?  Can't remember, that's why I post.
Also do you like those screens with the chain around the edge to use on hatch screens?

Dale,
Bugs can be a problem at some anchorages, but usually it's a minimal problem. That said, I've never cruised without them and would not want to. I can think of a couple of anchorages where the mosquitos and midges were a plague, but most of the places we have visited, they were non-existent.  I have  folding screened companionway doors and wooden framed screens for the overhead hatches.

You bring up something I had forgot, how about black flies?  They are those miniature little black fruit fly looking things that bite like there is no tomorrow. They tend to burrow in your hair and common especially way up north in the spring of the year especially up in Canada.
