Title: garboard drain-deep keel
Post by: jpendoley on November 10, 2016, 02:01:55 PM
How does one install a garbaord drain plug in a 365 with a bilge that is deeper than your arms can reach? Really want to get this done

I didn't install the original, but there was one in the 365 ketch I recently bought.  Makes draining the bilge when hauled out very easy.  Unfortunately the plug on mine was frozen in place (the plug had a 3/8" square hollow and accepted a 3/8" drive socket wrench, but was stripped), so I had to remove the screws and remove the entire drain.  The actual hole in the hull was 3/4".  I bought a larger replacement to install in the Spring.  The hole in the hull for that one will be 1", and the plug will accept a 1/2" drive.  Installs with sealant and 4 #10 screws from the outside of the hull.  Bronze isn't cheap, but I found mine here:

You could just drill and tqp right into the side of the keel. It is about 3/4" thick.  Drill and tap a standard pipe thread to fit what ever plug you can get your hands on that has an internal drive hole. Make sure the plug sits slightly into the hole and does not stick out. You could even add pipe dope (thread sealant) when installing the plug in the spring.
