Title: Wire Measurements
Post by: Hooligan on October 02, 2016, 01:10:13 PM
Does anyone have the standing rigging, pin to pin measurements of a P36/367 cutter?

Be careful, these boats are old enough and the mast base problem has caused many a trim of the spar that one boats pin to pin dimensions could be quite different than an other boats P to P's. We run into this all the time on all kinds of boats. The best way to go is to measure what you have.

I would suggest you measure each wire individually to get the right measurement.  If you leave the mast up, then you will be doing a lot of climbing the mast.  That is what I did and it worked.

I guess I will do it the right way, drop the mast, change the rigging and put it back up.

One compromise is to measure it pin to pin either from a bosuns chair or from a cherry picker.  We did the latter and it worked out fine when we got completely new rigging last year.  It isn't that bad to do from a bosuns chair, just one trip up in a cutter with a helper on deck.  Check how the mast rake is first because if it is way out, it can affect your measurements.  That way you only have to take it apart once to put the new rigging on.

You can also terminate on one end with a Norseman or Stay-lock fitting and run the cable dimensions a little long and assemble on site.  More labor, but works.  That is what we did with our headstay on the main.  You can also SWAG and make it up in extra long fittings in the turnbuckles, but that is a really cheesy way to do things.  If you replace the turnbuckles, they are not all the same length and the modern ones can be a different dimension so account for that if you need to.

My boat has Norseman terminals. Norseman went out of business two years ago and it is impossible to
get the cones. I may have buy all new Sta locs.
