Title: Prop Shaft Stuffing Box?
Post by: P69 on July 08, 2016, 04:32:30 PM
Can anyone help me find stuffing box for my 367?  It has an old PSS that I will replace and want to go back to a normal stuffing box.

Shaft log OD is 2 5/16"
Shaft is 1 1/8" dia

Dale looked, but couldn't find that combination.

Thanks

Your hose ID should be 2 1/4".  Its a standard part from Buck Algonquin. Get the right hand thread version. PN 00BP113H

Thanks Pete,

What's the difference between right and left hand thread? I mean. . I know the difference between right and left, but why right over left?

My prop spins clockwise (right handed prop).

Thanks

Normally Pearson's have a left hand prop. Spins CCW when viewed from the rear. The right hand nut will not spin off and sink your boat under power if the jam nut gets loose.

Thanks,

Since I have a right hand prop, I should get the left hand nut right? or do I have that backwards?

Since your gear reduction is in the gearbox you have 2 rotation reversals in your drive train and hence a RH prop. The left hand nut on the stuffing box would be the way to go. So it self tightens in forward direction.  This is a level a detail that probably gets overlooked on most repowers.

I've seen a wrong direction nut spin off  the stuffing box of a Tahiti ketch. The old guy have a lot of water in the boat before he knew what had happened.   Pete

Left hand.  Hmm. That's the problem Dale ran into. The Buck Algonquin left hand stuffing boxes don't  have the combination of 1 1/8" shaft with 2  1/4" ID hose.

Man, another hurdle.

I can get the box in LH or RH from good old Buck.  The issue is your dimension of the tube at 2 5/16". Also be aware that the log hose for a 365/367 is around 9" long as opposed to the stock version of around 4" from Buck so we can not order the standard log assembly from Buck.  The hose must be ordered separately and the box ordered separately to get the longer hose.

I know your boat is in the water but somehow I would verify the diameter of the fiberglass tube.  Like I told you, I dont want to send you something that dosen't fit and you don't want to pull the boat and find the same.

Oh, my misunderstanding. I thought I was out of luck.

There is a little bit of the fiberglass tube exposed where the PSS bellows does not reach and it is 2 5/16". This is near the after end where the tube meets the hull.  2 1/4" ID hose should be about right.  This morning, I confirmed that OD of 2 5/16.

I'll contact you by phone  to discuss and make sure we're on the same page.

Thanks Dale.

When I replaced my box assembly from Buck,  I went with the shorter hose length. It was my understanding that the shorter lengths are the modern approach as they are  proven to be less prone to twisting  and rupture. I did use the preferred toggle bolt clamps over the traditional worm gear clamps as well.   Pete

We got the parts from Dale, and went with the longer hose, but ended up cutting it shorter with a table saw. Like Pete, we also used new Toggle Bolt clamps.  All is working well.
