Title: Engine/fuel tank replacement (with pics)
Post by: SVJourney on April 23, 2016, 04:08:21 PM
Here in New Zealand for cyclone season.  Replaced the original fuel tank and did a minor engine overhaul while I was at it.  Both the engine and the fuel tank came out through the companionway.  Had to cut one wall of the galley sink cabinet.  There's a hard splice there now.  Lifted the back of the engine with a chainfall over the main boom supported by both both main and mizzen stay sail halyards.  Lifted the front with a block and tackle mounted on the beam that supports the mizzen mast.  Once the engine was on the floor, it was removed by a light crane. Worked fairly well.... some grunting/swearing involved.  Fuel tank slid right out after engine was gone.

Pictures and storie on Dana's blog: www.galleywenchtales.com/2016/03/splash-amphibious-return.html

Here's the list of work done in the area:
replaced exhaust elbow
replaced all hoses
replaced alternator belt
replaced engine mounts (R&D mounts.  ~$265 USD)
replaced drive coupling (R&D high deflection plate)
installed stainless steel drip pan
rebuilt starter
overhauled heat exchanger
replaced starter relay
rewired engine complete
stripped and painted engine
changed engine gaskets (Fricken rear main seal STILL drips!)
overhauled injection pump
Replaced #1 injector
replaced all fuel lines
replaced raw water pump
replaced fuel tank  (aluminum ~$400 USD +paint)

Whangarei has excellent facilities and pros to get stuff done.  Parts came overnight from Auckland.  Mounts and plate were in stock.  Tank was fabricated at the Riverside Drive Marina where we were hauled out.

S/V Journey,
I am totally inspired by your blog, thank you! Makes all the knuckle banging and body contorting associated with restoring my 365 seem well worth it. Please keep your updates coming!
