Title: SCUBA tank storage
Post by: P69 on February 14, 2016, 10:54:01 AM
Where do ya'll store your SCUBA tanks?

I'm thinking of building a rack for 2 or 3 tanks (vertical storage) in the hanging locker opposite the head. I don't want them on deck because of theft, weather, and waves, but can't figure out  how to make the rack.

Probably not that hard, my mind is just not coming up with any ideas.

Thanks

You might look at fender racks, perhaps you could adapt the bands etc.  Maybe the local dive shop has some old BCs you could steal parts from.  Might have to take it apart and reuse the bits.  Maybe look for an over center latch to make it easier to get in and out.  A false floor with cutouts in plywood or starboard the diameter of the tank base would secure the base.  Dive boats I have been on seem to use some kind of tie around the valve at the top secured to a board on top with a half circle scallop cut to fit the top of the tank.

I store my tanks in the starboard lazarette just aft of the water heater, next to the cockpit drain thru-hull.

Thanks for the ideas.

I came up with this preliminary diagram for two tanks, stored in the hanging locker, which I've gutted. WHen that cedar lining is remove, there is a ton of space in there.

I want to have brackets that hold each tank independently and securely so the tanks don't fly around the cabin in rough weather.

I'll post pictured when I 'm done in a few months from now.
