Title: Radar Reflector
Post by: SV Alfresco on January 09, 2014, 09:45:20 AM
I have the mast down and think it would be a good time to install a radar reflector. I sail from Block Island Sound to Buzzards Bay and there is a lot of commercial traffic and fog. Practical sailor doesn't seem to have anything current on this subject. I have seen a number of boats with a reflector that looks like a small fender attached to the mast. I think it is an Echomax. Any thoughts on this or recommendations?

perhaps instead of a reflector, put that $ towards an AIS unit?

+1 on the AIS.
Years ago Practical Sailor did some comparison testing with the Firdell Blipper and several open type reflectors. I believe the gold Mylar Davis "emergency" reflector did about the best.
