If any one has a used or rebuilt raw water pump and or a Paragon transmission I am interested in buying. If you have suggestions as for reasonably priced alternatives, I'm all ears. From reading the posts, its seems that the 1:1 Velvet Drive is a popular substitute for the Paragon. Creative suggestions for the water pump? I'm going to get mine rebuilt but I'd like a back up. I got a price quote for a new one from a Westerbeke distributor and I think gold is less expensive.
I have several Sherwood raw water pumps ranging from a basic casting that needs a full overhaul to one ready to go. I am sure I can supply one well below the dealer price. Dave my first thought is to decide what raw water pump you have,then go on line and start shopping.Westerbeke is always higher.Velvet Drive sounds like a good choice,1to1 without a reduction gear.There are many new and used around.I know the new ones have an aluminum case the older ones are cast iron which I don't is a bad thing. I just replaced my Paragon (never liked it) with a Velvet Drive (loved all 3 I've owned). The replacement is Model 71C, direct drive. I documented the replacement and will post the process as soon as I can remember how. If anyone has specific questions, email me at cozzmann@yahoo.com. Jim
The raw water pump that is cheapest is the Sherwood G65. There are rebuild kits available online, part # 12221, but it is cheapest to just remove the 2 bearings and the seal and get new ones matched from a bearing supply house. Cost me $15 bucks from Florida Bearing in FT Lauderdale.
I got Timken 471466 seal and NTN SC0228LLUC3/L627 bearings
BTW, when reinstalling the raw water pump, be sure to do a lateral alignment as per service bulletin #10. I found out the hard way how short bearing seal life is if you don't align the pump when you install it. Pretty easy, just install the pump nuts on finger tight, then spin the engine over a couple revolutions to align the pump, then carefully tighten the nuts without disturbing the alignment.
Thanks for all the help and advice. Experience is a great teacher and learning from those who have faced these issues successfully with the Pearson is a real asset. I have a lot more to learn about her to maintain her properly. If any of you have some pieces of wisdom to share on what you've learned from maintaining your boat, please pass that on.
Wayne, That is great information parts numbers for bearings and seals for the Sherwood pump.I have been looking for seals and bearings for my spare Jabsco 3270-0001.So far I have checked five of the ten bearing suppliers in town,the search will go on today.When or if I find a source I will post parts numbers and cost.I did find the bearings on line at 85.00 ea. plus tax and shipping.Allen

LOL Dave! I don't really think I can say that I have passed these hurdles successfully. The reason I found out about the alignment issue comes from having to travel 400+ miles across the Bahamas with a raw water pump pissing salt water all over my engine like a big dog. It also sprayed on the belt, which took the water all over the alternator and killed it rather spectacularly. The engine steamed and kept running, but it looked like a Morton salt factory by the time we got back to Florida and found parts. I could make margaritas off of my exhaust manifold.

And a spare raw water pump is something I would not leave home without. Next year I am carrying a spare pump AND parts to rebuild if it fails. Because last year, one spare was not enough.
