Title: Inside informationm, The Set-up
Post by: Dale Tanski on December 25, 2006, 09:28:54 AM
Hi... I guess I am the newest member to this 365 owners club.  I am thankful that there is once again one to go to.  The last one was a real asset and provided tons of information.  Perhaps some of you recognize the name Maruska.  She is the 1976 ketch that I purchased in August of 2005, orphaned by the death of her previous owner, six months into ownership and a slash and burn refit.  As time allows, I will post some pictures of the way I found her, or you can read about the Rebirth of Maruska in Good Old Boat Magazine. I began writing articles to help pay for the project.
The boats interior was heavily gutted.  The ice box was cut down the center of the access hatch (fore & aft) leaving a large hole down into the bilge.  The entire port side of the main cabin was gone to the hull.  The rear bulkhead, galley and engine cowling were gone.  The port side pilot berth was gone along the aft storage unit and both side water tanks were cut in to. The overhead galley storage unit was trimmed to the ceiling via saw-zall.  Wiring and plumbing was either cut, gone or left mangled.  She had water, (bow down attitude) deep water up in the V-berth.  By the end of May of this year, we will be sailing her home form Havre De Grace Maryland to Buffalo, New York, approximately 1000 n/miles.  The good news for you is, that I have seen, modified, repaired or replaced areas in the boat that most will never get to, could get to, or have to get to, and have intimate knowledge to answer questions for you adventurous ones.  In many cases I have been where only the factory has gone.  So...  I will answer your questions (as time allows) any question that I can about the innards of the boat.  Merry Christmas and Good Sailing...  Dale Tanski

Welcome to the board!

I've actually been following the story in Good Ol' Boat. I must say it's a daunting task, and I give you a lot of credit taking it on.

Dale....glad to have you onboard!  My wife and I have ready every one of your refit accounts in Good Old Boat.  We are amazed at the scope of the project you took on...and just LOVE that photo of your Westerbeke 40 hanging over the side of the boat via the Boom!

Again...welcome to the Pearson Yacht Club!

I would enjoy reading and seeing as much as possible about your refit.

Is Maruska still in Havre De Grace? I would enjoy dropping by to see Maruska and discussing the refit.

Thanks
Garner

Because of space, Good Old Boat only prints 1 out of 20 or so of the pictures that I send them, they choose.  So... I have plenty.  Most are used for reference materials for myself.  They come in very handy 370 miles away.  I keep an extensive notebook full of dimensions, sketches and photos. Because this is a P365 site only, I could add specific references that someone working on their Pearson could use.
Time of course is always an issue but I am willing to help out if I can.  A lot of my time goes to fund raising as this is a huge part of this project.  Most of the reason that I took on such a "daunting task" is that we couldn't afford a P365 any other way.  I am a sweat equity kind of guy with two kids in college, two at home and a mortgage.  The next issue of Good Old Boat should have an article I wrote about buying and selling on E-bay.  I have raised money and saved big bucks using E-Bay.  I also am working on a Catalina 30 and a Pacific Seacraft Orian (other people's boats) to generate boat cash.  When I talk to Karen Larson the editor of GOB, she tells we what an article is worth in terms of boat parts!  Let me know what you need and let's get started.  Dale Tanski

Garner,

Yes Maruska is still in Havre De Grace... unfortunately.  I say that because the original schedule would have had us leave late last August.  Anyway, she will be there until the end of May.  My oldest daughter had to head for school in the beginning of August and the heat in the Bay last summer kicked my butt.  I fell behind and I was figuring on leaving toward the end of August.  The new plan is to shake her down in the bay for a few weekends and when the oldest two are out of college at the end of May, pull the little kids out if school and head to Norfolk, hang a left and head for New York.  I make the trip to the boat approx. every other weekend unless the weather during the winter months is poor.  I get there at 2 or 3 Saturday am and head north on Sunday after 2 or 3 pm.  Have you ever sailed up the coast?  Keep in touch and we can get together.  Dale Tanski
